Analyzing the carbonates in rocks

Lesson 5 Date Nov. 25

50min
GENERAL OUTCOMES
Demonstrate knowledge of materials that comprise Earths crust, and demonstrate
skill in classifying these materials
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES
Give description of the properties of a particular rock or mineral, identify a
sample rock or mineral that matches those properties of a particular rock or
mineral, identify a sample rock or mineral that matches those properties.
Properties that students should be able to describe and interpret include:
o Presence of Carbonates
CROSS-CURRICULAR CONNECTIONS
Language Arts
5.2 work with a group
o Contribute ideas and information on topics to develop a common
knowledge base in the group
NUMERACY/LITERACY; ENGAGED/ETHICAL/ENTREPRENEURIAL STUDENT
Engaged thinker numeracy, know how to learn
Ethical citizen think critically, manage information
KAGAN STRATEGIES/INSTRUCTIONAL INTELLIGENCES
Graffiti
MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES/LEARNING STYLES
Auditory
Visual
Tactile/kinesthetic
BLOOMS TAXONOMY GUIDING QUESTIONS
Recall what properties have we already looked at
Predict what will happen when a chalk and limestone is placed in vinegar
MATERIALS
Vinegar
Chalk
Limestone

MANIPULATIVES
Smartboard

My rock collection sheets

Medium sized white paper
Paper towel
markers

TEACHER ACTIVITIES
STUDENT ACTIVITES
Anticipatory Set (Hook)
Recall what properties we have
Recall what property we have
already looked at?
looked at and write and/or draw
what you know on your groups
Graffiti Each piece of paper will
have a property name on it, students
can draw and/or write what they
know about their property
One person in each group will share
One person from each group will
using my group and 1 some ideas
then share using my group and I
they came up with
o Colour
o Lustre (metallic flecks,
glassy flecks, oily lustre
and dull lustre)
o Texture (coarse, fine, very
fine)
o Size (sand, granules,
pebbles, cobbles, boulder)
o Hardness (Very softfingernail, Soft penny,
Medium nail, Hard
emery file, Very -hard
glass)
o Buoyancy (sink, float)
o Magnetism

Practice/Development
Watch YouTube video
Review video
Have students come up click smart
board and read each sentence.
Split students into two groups and
have them go to the two vinegar
stations
Ask students: if a rocks contains
carbonates what happens? What
type if rock contains carbonates?

Come up to smart board and read

sentence

Before going to stations have

students predict what will happen
when chalk and limestone are
dropped in the vinegar (predict in
head, will it fizz and bubble or not)
Go to stations
now students will get a chance to be
geologists and test the carbonates of
their rocks
hand out rocks collections sheets
Review: what happens if a rocks
contains carbonates? If it does there
is a good chance you have a
sedimentary rock
have students test and record what
happens to each rock in the vinegar
(if it fizz and bubbles write
carbonates if it doesnt write no
carbonates)
dry rocks off with paper towel
(have one students from each group
get paper towel for the rest)
