10/20/2015 They Say, I Say Chapters 1 & 2 The first chapter deals with writers starting with what others are saying. There is an example provided of Dr.X referring to other peoples passages during his presentation. It goes on to say that when entering a conversation we must start with what the other person Is saying then introduce your own ideas. The book provides templates which I feel are helpful focusing on: Standard views, introducing what they say, making what they say into what you say, introducing something applied or assumed, introducing ongoing debate as well as several others. The chapter closes by placing additional emphasis on keeping what they say and others point of view in mind. Chapter 2 focuses more on summarizing others articles and making them relevant to others thoughts. A tip for doing this to balance what the original author is saying with the writers own focus. TSIS recommends writers to be successful in doing so by putting yourself in the other persons shoes and knowing your goal for what you are writing. This chapter also mentions the importance of summarizing satirically or putting your own spin to the original work.
