Running head: TEACHING/LEARNING PROCESS

I participated with my peers in a teaching project on the topic of proper hand washing
technique.
Group Teaching Project
Phuong Custer, Anonymous, Melissa Muratore
Handwashing; A Visual and Auditory Guide on the Importance as well as Proper
Technique

Prerequisite Knowledge:
A basic knowledge and understanding of key terms such as clinical procedure, clinical skills,
hand hygiene, handwashing, infection prevention and patient safety.
Purpose/Goals:
As a result of visual and auditory instructional means, each nurse will acquire understanding of
the importance of handwashing for infection prevention, know when to wash his or her hands,
the steps involved in effective handwashing and when it is appropriate to use soap and water or
hand cleansing technique such as alcohol based gels.
Learning/Teaching Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, each nurse/participant will:
Acknowledge the importance of hand hygiene and the impact that it has on infection
prevention and patient safety (Perception)
Recognize which handwashing agents are actually used and the situations in which it is
not appropriate to use alcohol hand gel. (Perception)
Obtain clinical skills to properly perform the technique of handwashing. (Set)
Demonstrate the five moments of hand hygiene as described by the World Health
Organization(WHO) (Guided Response)
Perform the clinical procedure (Complex and Overt Response)
a. Through return demonstration
Create individual style of how to incorporate proper handwashing technique within the
patient care setting. (Organization)
Teaching Plan: The lecture will be geared towards both learning styles. There will be a short
outline regarding the multiple microorganisms that are considered the main source of infection;
this will be followed by emphasizing the best method of infection prevention through
handwashing with the traditional soap and water or alcohol based gels. (Auditory/ Visual)

There will be an animation poster showing a nurse with soiled hands. The picture will
show the steps of proper technique along with a brief description performed during each
step. (Visual)
There will be a short interactive educational video available at the following website:
http://www.cdc.gov/handhygiene/training/interactiveEducation/ Each learner should

TEACHING/LEARNING PROCESS

complete the interactive educational video prior to moving on to the hand washing
demonstration station. (Visual/Auditory)
There will be a station that will be designated for hand washing along with staff to
witness return demonstrations and give feedback on proper hand washing technique.
Nurse Educator will give out samples of tiny packets of antibacterial soap and 60%
alcohol based gel.
Clinical Setting: Hospital, college stimulation lab
The props will be a sink with a temperature controlled warm water faucet, accessible
paper towels within reach, and waste basket on the floor near the sink area.
A table with a bottle of 60% alcohol based gel with clear bottle labeled instructions.
Educator will first physically demonstrate correct standard of care technique step-bystep handwashing.
The educator will encourage learners to ask questions during demonstration.
Every student will take turns demonstrating the handwashing technique to each other
until each of the students feel competent.
When students participate and interact through repetition, the student will learn the skill
effectively and be able to recall the rationale by understanding.
A brochure with printed directions on steps to apply and use hand sanitizer will be given
to each learner.
A fact sheet will be given to students, in addition to information on internet links to
access ways to utilize podcasts, diagrams, and videos to gain a better understanding of
effective handwashing.
Upon summation of the class, verbally reiterate that handwashing prevents the spread of
infection from patient to patient but protects the nurse as well.
Saving the best for last by turning the learned session into a game of interaction amongst
peers. The class will be divided into two groups. The group that answers the most
questions correctly wins a prize (a scented bottle of Bath & Bodyworks hand sanitizer).
This creative method will help the instructor evaluate the effective learning of the
teaching plan and if the students met their goals and objectives.
It is important for the teacher to provide a short evaluation survey of the educator, course
material, and learning environment.

TEACHING/LEARNING PROCESS

Encourage the students to write comments on additional improvements or suggestions

for the next handwashing class set up.
According to Center of Disease Control, "Keeping hands clean are one of the best ways
to prevent the spread of infection and stop germs from spreading to one person to another."

*Upon completion each participant will receive 1contact credit hour (CEU)
