Tile Pattern Group Challenge

Goals: Taking Risks, Communicating Productively, Working Persistently

Facilitator:

Team Captain:

Make sure the group reads all the way through this card together before
you begin. Your role is to check for understanding. Ask your group does
everyone get what to do? Do you get that? Can you explain that again?
Keep your group together. Make sure everyones ideas are heard. Did
anyone see it a different way? Are we ready to move on? Try to give all
members equal time to talk.

Resource Manager:

Recorder/Reporter:

Study this Tile Pattern:

Make sure all conversations and work happen in the middle of the table. All
work should happen first on the Pile Patterns work sheet. Make sure all
questions are team questions.
Your group needs to prepare a presentation poster. Make sure everyone
has had a chance to practice explaining the groups solution. Your poster
needs to show everyones ideas, be well organized, identify the tile pattern,
and explain your reasoning.

Discuss the following in the middle of the table, and then record the ideas and answers on your own
paper.

Draw piles #5 and #6. What patterns do you see? Discuss them as a group in the middle of the
table.
What would pile 100 look like? How would pile 0 and 1 look? How do you know? Be prepared to
explain your reasoning.
Use reasoning and evidence to explain the pattern, how you identified it, and how you were able to
predict what patterns 0, 1, and 100 look like.

Call the teacher over when every member of your group can explain your reasoning and you are
ready to create your presentation poster.
