Protocols of Web Coding

Terminology
Authoring
Authoring a website is basically just the
same as when someone writes a book, they
are called an author. When someone
produces a website, they are authoring or
writing it in the HTML or XHTML language.
This is the virtual material that eventually
makes up a fully produced website with text,
colour and images. Authoring is just the building process to make a
website.
Sites
The words sites,
or site, is just a
word that is used
instead of
website. A site is
a page that shows
information on
multiple topics or just one single topic, depending on what the website
has been made for. Somethings that websites can be made for are for
shopping, discussions on topics, or news. The word site is usually used
because it is easier and faster to say when in conversation than website
is. One good example of a website for shopping is Amazon. It is made so
that users have to make an account to purchase items from the website.
Even with this on it, it is a basic and easy to use website for any users that
visit it. It has also been made so that visitors can navigate through the
different pages with ease.
Uploading
This is a process that lets people who are on a website put data onto it,
such as text, images or videos. Facebook is one website which lets users
upload all 3 types of media. Facebook makes visitors on it to create and
account to be able to use it and then they can upload different text,
images or videos. Another example of
uploading is on the website YouTube. This
form of uploading data is in the media of
videos. YouTube makes it so that you dont
need an account to watch videos that other
people have uploaded, but you do need one to upload a video yourself.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

Rhys Stafford

This is an internet protocol that is for transmitting files between different

computers using the internet. FTP is an application that uses the internets
IP protocols, like HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and SMTP (Simple Mail
Transfer Protocol) does. The common use for FTP is to transfer the data for
webpages from the creator to the computer. It is also used for
downloading files from the internet to your computer. FTP can be used
with a command line interface or some type of commercial program that
shows a graphical interface. FTP session have to different modes, passive
and active. If it is working in active mode, the server will initiate a data
connection back to the client when they start a session via a command
channel request. In passive mode, the client will get the information sent
through the command channel. Passive mode works well across all
firewalls and NAT gateways (Network Address Translation). This is because
it has the client starting all of the connections.

Web Page
Web Page Construction
Web pages can be created in ways like, hand writing the HTML coding,
designing it in Dreamweaver or using added ActionScript in flash. HTML
stands for hypertext markup language. There isnt just one set way to
create a web page when hand writing the code, there are many different
ways. You can make a web page in the notepad application on windows
computer (or any other text editor). Once you have typed some coding
into notepad and you want to view it as a web page, you can save it as
a .htm file. Once its saved you can click it to open it and it will open as a
web page on internet explorer.
Text
The text involved in the coding when making a web page usually consists
of different tags. These tags do different things to the text, images or
background on the website. As an example, one tag can make the text,
that you have nested in the tag, bold. To do this tag, you just put <b>
before the text and then </b> after the text that you are wanting to make
bold. The tag needs to be closed or all of the text on the page that is after
the opening of the tag will become bold. These are some more of the tags
that are used when creating the web
page:
<U> Underlines the text </U>
<P> Starts a new paragraph </P>
<DEL> Creates text with a line through
<STRONG> Makes the writing bold
<EM> Makes the text italic </EM>

it </DEL>
</STRONG>

Rhys Stafford

This is some of the tags that you can use with the example of what it
would look like on a web page.
Fonts
Fonts on webpages are different and change when the HTML code is
different. They correspond to the code that is put in. To change the font,
font size or colour of a piece of text, a font tag is needed around the text
that is being changed. The different font tags that can be used to change
the text are:

<font size=12> text </font>

<font colour=green> text
</font>
<font face=Georgia, Arial> text

</font>

Colours
Hex colour codes are used when colours are being used on a web page.
Each colour and shade have their own unique hex code. The codes have
either numbers, letters or both in them
and they are 6 digits long. White and
black are the most known hex colour
codes. The codes for these are #000000
and #FFFFFF. Other different colours will
have a more complex code to them,
involving numbers and letters. Hex codes
can be used in HTML instead of the colour
names. So, instead of using <font
color=white> we can use <font color=#000000>.
Images
When images are being put onto a web page, there is a tag needed in the
HTML code. A basic tag will look like: <img src=happyface.gif>. The
only part of this tag that needs changing is
the text to a link on the internet to a
picture. These tags can work anywhere in
the HTML code. You can also add alt text to
the image within the tag. With the alt text
added, the tag will look like this: <img
src=happyface.gif alt=Angry Face>.
The alt text can be used to describe the
image that is on the web page.
Tables

Rhys Stafford

Tables for a web page are written in HTML. Some tables can have quite a
simple code, but others can have quite a complicated one. This is an
example of a table:
<table border=2>
<tr> <td>Raha Mutisya</td>
<td>1493</td></tr>
<tr> <td>Shalom Buraka</td>
<td>3829</td></tr>
<tr> <td>Hallie Curry</td>
<td>8372</td></tr>
<tr> <td>Shari Silberglitt</td> <td>4827</td></tr>
</table>
The <table> part creates the actual table. The <tr> part is the table rows.
The <td> part is the table data, which defines each separate cell of the
table. The <border=2> shows if there is a border or not and how thick it
is.
Hyperlinks
The hyperlinks on a web page are put on in the HTML code. They are done
using the tag:
<a href=Internet URL here> Text that has the link </a>. The only thing
that needs changing in this tag is the Internet URL here to an actual link
to a website. The Text that has the link can also be changed to anything
that you want the viewer to see.
This is an example of the hyperlink tag with
the colleges link and the text Link to College
Website.

HTML
Nature of HTML and XHTML
The nature of HTML and XHTML are slightly different. XHTML wont work if
there is the smallest fault with the coding in it. This is why most people
prefer to use HTML when they are creating a web page. The site will
probably still work if you forget to close a tag in HTML, but in XHTML it
wouldnt work at all. XHTML is usually only used by people who know fully
what they are doing when it comes to coding. Both types of coding will
end up with the same results at the end, but XHTML is cleaner. It is also
preferred by servers because it eliminated any problems. HTML is the best
for people who are just learning how to use it to create web pages,
because it isnt as strict as XHTML.

CSS
Nature of Cascading Style Sheets
CSS is a different language of coding which works with HTML. CSS include
things that you cant do on HTML on its own. CSS lets you add extra
design features to web pages. It can also help to keep the coding look tidy
and not complex. CSS coding looks similar to HTML. It uses tags, like
HTML. CSS describes what the scroll bars and other assets look like on the
website.
