CONCEPTS
Cell Theory: Parts/definition, contributing scientists, development
Differences and similarities between prokaryotes and eukaryotes, plant and animal cells
Endosymbiosis Theory
Structure and Function of Individual Organelles
Relationship between cellular organelles and functions of the cell
Difference between science theory and every day theory
Students will be able to:
1. Discuss the components of cell theory, the scientists who contributed to it, and examples
of each part of the theory.
2. Describe how the development of Cell Theory reflects the nature of science and the way
that scientific understandings advance.
3. Compare and contrast the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, plant and animal cells.
4. Analyze the functions of cellular organelles, and how the function of a cell relates to its
organelles.
5. Describe the Endosymbiosis Theory and how it relates to cell structure and function
6. Create analogy to describe cellular structure and function.
7. Use a microscope to investigate cellular structure
8. Plan and conduct an experiment, including: formulating a question, controlling
independent variables, collecting data on dependent variable, selecting appropriate format
to summarize data, and preparing a report of investigation.

9. Justify why a cell is alive, but its constituent organelles and molecules are not
necessarily.
10. Analyze the difference between the word theory as used in the scientific community
compared to the usage in everyday vernacular.
