Ears and Hearing! A Five Senses Song - Mr. Rs Songs for Teaching

6. Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge:

The students will have prior knowledge about the hearing sense because they had the
introductory lesson the day before.
The morning work will include coloring in and cutting out Mr. Potato Heads ears. They
will place them in their Mr. Potato Head envelope in their baskets.
7. Lesson Beginning:
The trigger song will be played to signify the start of the five senses unit.
The song Shhhh...A Book about Hearing will be read to the students.
This book has a little more of a scientific element, therefore the teacher will be ready to
change some words and answer questions.

8. Instructional Plan:
After the story, the students will be asked to turn their bodies around so they are not
facing the projector. They will have brought either their folders or whiteboards to lean on
so they can write on the given worksheet. They will also have a pencil.
A powerpoint will be played with a variety of different sounds. The students will have to
use their ears and ears only to identify the sounds being played.
They will then have a minute or two to match the object that makes that sound to a
picture on the worksheet.
For example, the first that will be played will be a, Baaaah!, they will put a number 1
next to the picture of the sheep. The next sound is an ambulance wail so they will have
to find the corresponding picture and put a number 2 next to it.
The students will be given 10 to 15, depending on the time frame.

o Differentiation:
For struggling students, sounds will be played again.
o Questions:
What is hearing, again?
What body part do we use, again?
What are some facts we learned yesterday?

What are some sounds we heard yesterday?

Do we think we can identify specific sounds without looking?
What does this sound like(repeated many times throughout the activity)
o Instructional Management:
Students will bring their folders or whiteboards to the rug with them so they will have
them ready when the activity begins. They will be asked to sit on them during the
reading so they are not distracted. Their pencil will remain in their spots as well.
This is a lesson that needs full concentration and focus, therefore, students who are
distracting and disruptive will be asked to sit out if they cannot prove themselves
responsible enough.Students will be reminded of expected behavior.

o Transitions:
Students will safely walk over to the rug and bring the needed material.
When the book is finished being read, the teacher will ask the students to merely pivot
their body so they are facing the back wall, opposite from the projector. The teacher will
wait until everyone has done just that.
When the activity is complete, the students will be asked to turn around one more time
so that they are facing the projector and ready to hear the closing song.
They will be dismissed by table colors to go back to their seats and pack up for the end
of the day.

9. Closure:
Students will listen to Mr. Rs Songs for Teaching. Ears and Hearing - A Five Senses
Song.
This will be the second time the students have heard this song so they will be
encouraged to sing along if they can.
