C1 Grammar

Quiz 4
A. Complete the paragraph with equative or comparative structures,
using the
clues in parentheses. Add many/much with nouns. Important:
those words in bold mean an increase while words in italics mean a
decrease with comparative clauses. This section is worth 7 points.

Students who actively participate in classroom activities are 1. more

likely than students (comparative: students, likely) who do not attend
class regularly. If each student comes to class and completes their
homework, they are 2. as likely as other students (equative: other
students in the class, likely) to complete the course with a good grade
and a solid foundation of knowledge for upper-level courses.
Homework is just 3. as important as (equative: classroom participation,
important) in order for a student to succeed. Sometimes, homework
can be 4. more difficult than class discussion,(comparative: class
discussion, difficult) but completing work on your own is 5. As
important as getting immediate help from a teacher (equative: getting
immediate help from a teacher, important). Students are 6. less likely
to succeed (comparative: to succeed, likely) if they choose to
participate in only one facet of the classroom activities. Each student

must develop his or her own style of learning outside the classroom,
and this is just 7. as important as classroom participation. (equative:
classroom participation, important.)
B. Complete the degree expressions with two (2) words that makes
sense. You will choose one from each group. See the example
below. This section is worth 3 points.
Example: Between home and work, it is surprising that people
still find enough time to (work/time : to/that) update their social
networking profiles each day.
1. When students work and take on a full-time schedule with
school, it is amazing that they are still able to (able/incapable ;
to/that) succeed both at work and at school.
2. Some older people are so healthy that (healthy/scared ; to/that)
they are able to complete long endurance races or even cliffjump.
3. Today, some people fear their identity being stolen. Because of
this, some individuals are too fearful to (fearful/happy ; to/that)
purchase items online with their credit card.

C. Complete the unreal conditionals and wishes using the correct form
of the
word in parentheses. This section is worth 5 points.

If dogs knew (know) how to speak, it would be much easier for

their owners to know what they need. For example, if a dog does not
(not, does) need to go outside, he would be able to say so and stay
inside and lounge on the couch. Many animal owners wish that they
could understand (can, understand) their animals, but animals dont
speak any human language. There are some people who wish their
animals had (have) the gift of language, but that is only wishful
thinking. Although animals could (can) have their own language they
use within their species, we do not understand it today.
