First Grade Redhawk Revue Rehearsal 3 (15-20 minutes)
Lesson Objectives: Using proper singing voices and posture while standing Working together as an ensemble To clearly articulate all the words in the verses of jailhouse rock Concert Preparation Duple Patterns Standards: Adopted Marshall Public Schools Academic Standards of Music Expression of Music (1.1.3 and 1.1.2) Materials and Resources: Songs of the 50s Book/CD, and piano Lesson Procedure: a) Introduction a. Each class will line up separately outside of the classroom. The class that is going to be on the right side of the room will enter first. They will be instructed to stay in the order they are in and to go all the way across the room and then across to their row (to imitate how they would enter the stage). After that class is in their spots we will bring in the other class. Once everyone is settled we will sing our Hello song and sing backbone up in order to warm up. I will remind them to sit straight and tall and to still use their level three voices even though there are more people in the room. b) Procedures a. To start our rehearsal on Jailhouse Rock I will sing the opening verse and chorus and play the piano. After I sing that I will ask the first graders to sing along with me. For each verse, I will first sing it while I play the piano and then ask the first graders to sing along with me. b. If the first graders need more practice on any of the verses or the chorus, I will break up the part they are struggling with into smaller sections. They will sing each section and then sing that part of the song in its entirety. c. I also have a worksheet that has a picture that represents each verse. If I feel that the students are really struggling to remember the words of the verses I will put up this worksheet so they can have a reference while they sing. c) Transitions
a. When we are reviewing the verses I will ask the students if
they can tell me the first few words that start to verse in order to trigger their memories. Before we start to sing with the CD I will ask them to stand up. My expectation is that when I ask the students to stand up they do so quickly and quietly (I will tell them my expectations before I ask them to stand). After they are all standing up we will talk about what good singing posture looks like while we stand. d) Closure a. Once the students are standing with good posture I will ask them to show me on their fingers what level voice they should use while they are singing (three). I will play the instrumental track of the CD and then go and stand in front of the kids. I will help the students with their entrances and will be singing to help them sing the correct pitches. We will sing through Jailhouse Rock with the CD twice. Accommodation: If students are having a particularly hard time with the verses I will put up the worksheet so they have a picture reference for all the verses. I can also adjust how much time we spend on one part of the song depending on how much practice the students need. One of our first graders has Cochlear implants so I need to wear a microphone when I teach so he can hear me better over all the other noise. Assessment: (Observational) I will be assessing students on proper singing posture and voice levels. I will also be assessing them on how well they can remember and sing the words and pitches. The last part of my assessment will be if they are able to sing to the tempo of the CD.
