Lesson Objectives: Treble Clef note identification Chant simple rhythms within music notation Perform simple melodies notated in treble clef Standards: Adopted Marshall Public Schools Academic Standards of Music Expression of Music (1.2.b., 1.3.a, and 1.3.b.) Materials and Resources: Recorder Karate Hot Cross Buns sheet, Recorder, Projector, ELMO Lesson Procedure: a) Introduction a. Students will come into the class and sit in their music rows. I will remind them that they will only take their recorders out when I tell them its okay. After everyone has sat down I will ask if anyone forgot his or her recorder today. If that is the case they need to borrow one from us for the day but will be reminded that they need to bring their folder and recorder to school when they have music class. b. After everyone has a recorder I will then tell them to take their recorders out of their cases. I will remind them that if they play their recorders while Im talking I will take it away and give it back at the end of class. We will also review how they are supposed to hold their recorders. I will ask them which hand is suppose to be on top (left) and which hand should be resting on the foot joint (right). I will also ask them which part of the fingers is used to cover the holes (pad part of the finger). Once I am confident that everyone is holding their recorders the right way we will start playing notes. b) Procedures a. Before we start playing Hot Cross Buns we will use the same playing exercise we did last week so the students can remind themselves of the notes we will be using. We will first go over what the fingering is for G and then play a whole note on G as an entire class. Then we will go over the fingering for A and play a whole note on A as an entire class. Finally we will go over the fingering for B and play a whole note on B as an entire class. After we have played
each note individually we will play the pitches in whole
notes in succession a couple of times. b. After the students are warmed up I will now have them work on Hot Cross Buns with me. I will ask them to raise their hands if they went home and practiced it. I will tell them that I know I asked them to go home and practice but because this is the first time we will be playing it as a group we need to work on it a little bit rather than just go for it. I will first have the students chant the rhythm of the entire song on Du. Then we will sing the song in rhythm and say the names of the pitches as we sing it. While we do this I will have students put their recorders in chin position and finger along while we practice it. Finally we will play the entire song all together. I will remind them that it is very important that they stay with the tempo that I give them so we can all stay together. c. If students are squeaking I will remind them of the two things they need to check if they are squeaking; are they blowing too hard and are their fingers covering the holes. We will repeat certain notes until the sound coming from the group sounds cohesive. When we are working on Hot Cross Buns I will have students repeat the chanting and singing until 80% of them are able to do it correctly. c) Transitions a. In between the warm up and Hot Cross Buns I will have them put their recorders in their laps so I can give them a brief run down on what we will be doing with Hot Cross Buns and why. After we are done playing Hot Cross Buns I will have the students put their records in their cases because I have to go over with them what we will be doing next week and how its all going to work. d) Closure a. I will talk to the students about how the Recorder Karate test is going to go next week. I have a rubric that I will be using next week that I will put up on the projector for the students to see. I will go through each section of the rubric and explain what I will be looking for in order for them to pass that section. b. I will also explain how the testing in class is going to work. I will break the students up into groups of four or five, depending on how many students are in the class. The students will need to order themselves as to who will go first, second, third etc. in their group when they get to the testing. There will be different stations set up in the classroom to keep the students active while there is a group testing.
i. One station will be the testing station. After the
group determines who wants to go first through who wants to go last, I will take students one by one to test while the others wait their turn and practice. The second station will be the students play the speed note naming game with Mrs. Root. The Third Station will be students creating simple rhythms for their group to read out loud. The fourth station will be the group working together on the next couple of songs that we will be working on in the weeks to come. Accommodations: If students need more time on Hot Cross Buns or just practicing notes I can spend extra time on that in order to help them. If students are having a hard time remembering their fingerings they are allowed to write how many fingers they need to have down under the notes in their music. Assessments: (Observational) I will be assessing the students on how well they remember how to hold the recorder and what aspects will make their recorder squeak. I will also be assessing them on how well they can play Hot Cross Buns in a group setting. It will be difficult to assess each student individually when the whole group is playing. I will be able to further assess them when we do Recorder Karate testing next week.
