Lesson Procedure:
a) Introduction
a. Students will come in and sit in their music rows with their
recorders and folders in front of them. Ill first begin with a
gentle reminder that today is the day that they will be
testing on Hot Cross Buns. When one group is testing
everyone else will be doing other things. I will have the
students all warm up together. I will put the magnetfingering chart along with the note that matches it up on
the white board for the students to see. I will first have
them play G-A-B-A-G in whole notes. I will demonstrate first
while they practice in chin position then they will try it with
me a couple of times. I then will have them play G-A-B-A-G
in half notes. They will practice it once in chin position
while I play it then they will play it with me. Then they will
play four quarter notes on each note in the same pattern.
They will first practice in chin position while I demonstrate
then they will play along with me a couple of times.
b) Procedures
a. I will ask the students to take out hot cross buns so we can
play it all together twice before the testing starts. I will
remind them that the exercises we did in our warm up is all
they need in order to play hot cross buns. I will quickly
remind them that their left hand is on top and their right
hand is a lobster claw on the foot joint of their recorder. I
will run through hot cross buns with them once. If there is a
problem with squeaking I will ask them to check if their
fingers are covering the holes, make sure they are not

blowing too hard, and to make sure they are not tonguing
too aggressively. We then will run through hot cross buns
again as a class.
b. I will have the students number off by 4s. I will give the
students about a minute to figure out the number order for
the individuals in their group. Next I will assign each group
to a station that is set up around the room.
i. Station 1: Testing Station
1. Students will be tested in the number order
they gave themselves. They will test one by
one and when they are not testing they are
practicing Hot Cross Buns or, when they are
done testing, Gently Sleep
ii. Station 2: Gently Sleep/Merrily We Roll Along
1. Students will be working together to practice
through Gently Sleep or Merrily We Roll Along.
iii. Station 3: Fingering Chart/Note naming
1. Students will be working with Mrs. Root by
filling out the blank magnet fingering chart and
blank magnet note staff.
iv. Station 4: Chanting Rhythms
1. Students will be given simple rhythms to go
through together as a group and chant. If they
get through all of the rhythms and there are
still people testing they will pick one group
member to write a rhythm and the group will
chant it.
c) Transitions
a. In between our warm up and practicing hot cross buns I will
tell them that they played all the notes and rhythms that
they will be playing during hot cross buns. When students
are moving from station to station I will count back from 10
in order to try and get students to move quickly.
d) Closure
a. After testing is all finished I will tell them that next week
we will have their karate belts for them to put on their
recorders. I will also let them know that the next test will
be on gently sleep and if they didnt pass today they just
need to keep practicing and they will have another chance
to test on hot cross buns very soon.
b. If there is still time left over after all the testing is done I
will let them choose if they want to read rhythms, play a
game, or work on gently sleep on their recorders. Before
they leave I will tell them to practice gently sleep. For the
individuals who dont pass I will ask them to continue to
practice hot cross buns.

Accommodations: Most of the students that we have are able to do

the testing without too much trouble. However we have to
accommodate for a few students. For our CI students, I will ask them to
show me fingerings for certain notes or I will ask them to watch and
make their fingers follow my fingers. They are also allowed to write in
the names of the notes and the fingerings of the notes.
Assessment: (Observational) The assessment for this lesson will be
their recorder test. I have a recorder rubric that I will be using that is a
pass/fail system. I showed the students ahead of time so they knew
what I would be specifically looking for. Students not only need to play
hot cross buns accurately but they also need to play and hold the
recorder correctly in order to pass.
