Literacy Prop Box Plan
Role:
For this literacy prop box, the students will assume the role of a camper. They will
be provided materials that either are or represent items that could be seen on a camping
trip.
Objectives:

Be able to identify vocabulary associated with camping


Use descriptive adjectives to describe items and activities
Become familiar with the role of a camper

Vocabulary:

Tent, campfire, forest, flashlight, nature, sleeping bag, shadows, canoe, hiking,
compass, lantern, canteen, backpack, picnic, binoculars, map, park ranger,
batteries, campsite

Materials/Props:

Flashlight
Miniature tent
Fake campfire-made from yellow and orange tissue paper
Binoculars
Fly swatter
Marshmallows
Skewers-toothpicks/other small sticks
Knapsack/small backpack
Hat
Bear stuffed animal
Raccoon stuffed animal
Twigs (to represent logs)

Plastic fruit (apple/orange/etc.)


Laminated flash cards-have picture and vocabulary word

Questions:

What words could you use to describea campfire? Marshmallows? A tree? See
which of the 5 senses you can use when you talk about what you notice about

each object.
What kinds of activities would you do if you went camping?
What animals do you think you might see?
Do you think you would have fun camping? Why?

First we pitch our tent
Then we chop our wood

(point thumbs proudly to chest)
Time to pack
(point to wristwatch)
My tent, my bedroll,
(Make tent with hands; then fold hands to cheek.)
And a snack.
(Pretend to eat)
I'll sit by the campfire ---(warm hands over fire.)
Its glow so bright.
(Fan and wiggle fingers to resemble fire.)

Then snooze in my tent


(Pretend to snore.)
'Til the morning light!
(Open eyes wide, forming sun over head.)
