NAME: Amber Toone

GOAL 1
KSA #3: The purposes of the Guide to Education and programs of
study for subject disciplines you teach. Know how to use these
documents to inform and direct your planning, instruction and assessment
of student progress.
KSA #4: Subject disciplines you teach. Complete a structured program
of studies by acquiring the knowledge, concepts, methodologies and
assumptions in one or more areas of specialization or subject disciplines
taught in Alberta Schools.
KSA #11: The purposes of student assessment. Know how to assess
the range of learning objectives by selecting and developing a variety of
classroom and large-scale assessment techniques and instrument, analyze
the results, including those from provincial assessment instruments, and
use them for the ultimate benefit of students.
Goal: Increase my knowledge of the content in the Social Studies 6
Program of Studies Curriculum and develop competence in
delivering/assessing topics and content in this subject area.
Strengths in this area:
Previous exposure to the Social Studies curriculum through a C&I
course in university as well as a short time period teaching Social
Studies 6,7, & 8 during PSII.
Eager to learn how/where to implement content in Social Studies 6 as
it is a topic that I have studied at a University level, therefore I am
intrinsically motivated to transfer this knowledge into the Social
Studies 6 curriculum.
Challenges in this area:
With Grade 6 being a PAT year, it carries the potential to teach
to the test to ensure good marks.
As a result of your professional growth, what will your students be
able to do?

Evidence of Success (i.e. impact on student learning):

Students will gain an understanding of: Democracy, The Charter of Rights
and Freedoms, Ancient Athens.
Student participation and excitement towards Social Studies will increase
throughout my 4 months at Wilson
Student feedback will be required during various times throughout the 4
months. This allows me to assess both formatively and summatively what
they have learned. I will use this feedback to alter my teaching to ensure
that they are learning the necessary content within the program of studies.
Year End Reflection:
Throughout the last four months I successfully achieved this
goal. I familiarized myself with Albertas Grade 6 Social
Studies Program of Study. I focused on compiling the
GLO/SLOs for the specific units I taught, then took the time to
research information pertinent to the subject. This allowed
me to feel competent in delivering classroom instruction. In
addition to this I continually sought out current events that
were relevant to the GLO/SLOs that I was instructing at that
time (or previously). In achieving this goal, I valued the
importance of collaboration with other colleagues to ensure
that all students within Grade Six were receiving the same
information to successfully complete the GLO/SLOs. Through
achieving this goal I was able to become more passionate
about the topics I taught, which was evident to the students.
As a result of this they join in and become passionate about
what they are learning.

Year-End Reflection:
I can proudly say I achieved this goal. My comfort zone lies
within the classroom and I really had to push myself to achieve
this goal. I joined the literacy, yearbook and Wolverine Classic
Hospitality committee. Every Wednesday morning I would
supervise the Breakfast Club. In addition to this I assisted
with Club Volleyball & Basketball, and together with another
colleague started a Disc Golf Club. By stepping outside of my
comfort zone I gained the confidence to be involved in various

areas that may not be my specialty. This experience also gave
me the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with
other colleagues and students that I may not have crossed
paths with otherwise. As a result of this goal I have gained
confidence in stepping outside of my comfort zone. This was a
very rewarding goal.
