HS-LS1- From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
.
Common Core Literacy and Mathematic Standards
Introduce precise claims, distinguish the claims from alternate or opposing claims and create an organization that establishes
clear relationships among the claims, counterclaims, reason, and evidence.
Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from or supports the argument presented.
Develop the topic with well-chosen, relevant, and sufficient facts, extended definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other
informatino and examples appropriate to the audience's knowledge of the topic.
Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the
usefulness of each source in answering the research questions; integrate information in the text selectively to maintain the flow
of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation

Disciplinary Core Ideas and Essential Questions

Chapter 7- Meiosis and sexual reproduction. In this chapter, it discusses the steps of meiosis and during the process,
chromosomes undergo independent assortment and crossing over. The purpose of meioses is to have genetic variation across
different gametes produced. The chapter then goes into the evolutionary advantage of genetic variation as it pertains to genetic
variation.
Essential Questions- How does meiosis contribute to genetic variation?
How many cells are produced from a parent cell in meiosis and explain how they are not identical?
How does sexual reproduction compare to asexual reproduction?
Why is genetic variation important to species?
Chapter 8- In this chapter, we use Mendel's work to predict the genotype and phenotype of future generation by the use of
Punnett squares. We discuss how alleles can be expressed and the four postulates stated by Mendel.

Essential Questions-Explain and show Mendel's four postulates?

Use a Punnett square to determine the genotype and phenotype of offspring
What two laws contribute to genetic variation?
What is the probability of traits to be expressed in an offspring
Chapter 8- Also in this chapter, we determine what type of trait is observed from a family pedigree. Also, the sections in the
chapter will investigate traits that can be influenced by environmental factors.
Use a pedigree to determine the if a trait is heritable
Use a pedigree to determine the type of trait in a family tree
Use a pedigree to determine if a trait is autosomal or sex-linked.
Investigate how traits can be influence by the environment.
Chapter 9- In this chapter we discuss the structure and function of DNA. It also discusses how DNA is replicated and the proteins
involved.
What four nucleotides are used to build to DNA?
What are the base-pairing rules?
What is the purpose of DNA replication?
How are errors in DNA replication result in changes in protein expression?
Performance Expectations

HS-LS3-1 Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from
parents to offspring
HS-LS3-2 Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from: (1) new genetic combinations through
meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors.
HS-LS3-3- Apply concepts of statistics and probability to explain the variation and distribution of expressed traits in a population
HS-LS1-4 Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms.
HS-LS1-1Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins which carry out the essential
functions of life through systems of specialized cells

Unit Summative Assessments

Chapter 7 Assessment- Short answer test- Students will be given a short answer test that will pertain to the benefits of sexual
reproduction
Chapter 8 (Part 1) Assessment- Punnett square- Students will answer questions and determine the probability of a trait being

expressed
Chapter 8 (Part 2) Assessment- Short answer test- Students will use a pedigree to determine the type of trait.
Chapter 9 Assessment- Quiz- Students will be given a multiple choice quiz

passed from parents to offspring

Students will explain how offspring can have different genes from their parents by
meiosis.

Lesson 2 [Sexual Reproduction]

Performance Expectation:

Acceptable Evidence Formative and/or Summative Assessment:

evidence that inheritable genetic variations may
result from: (1) new genetic combinations through
meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during
replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by
environmental factors.

Students will describe the pros and cons of sexual reproduction and how populations
can be affected by genetic variation.
