School: St. Marys Composite School Practicum Dates: August 28 December 18th Teacher Mentor: Rick Vornbrock School Administrator: Randy Spenrath University Consultant: Darron Kelly A. Professional Goals. Goal#1: Collecting assignments for assessment Rationale: In my PSII, collecting of assignments proved to be a very hard task. I always had a list of names of students on the board that did not hand in their assignments. I would tell students that they would need to stay in at lunch to come finish their assignments but I still had students that were reluctant to do so. A couple weeks into my PSIII, I am realizing the lower the grade the more missing assignments. Students need to hand in their assignments as this is an assessment of their learning. I collect both formative and summative assignments that assess student learning. Without this knowledge it is hard for me to move on in the content material without leaving some students behind. . Goal#2: Time management Rationale: In my previous practicums, I have struggled with getting all the material into my lessons. I am also finding it challenging to stay to my unit plans this semester because of how I planned it out. I was uncertain as to how flex Fridays (now Thursdays) worked and did not know that Fridays switched between odd and even. Time management is very important because students need to have the right amount of time to work on assignments, and study for quizzes and tests to be successful learning the content material. I also need to make sure that I do not rush through the notes or the explanation of the course content.
B. Strategies (How I will go about achieving my goals).
Strategies for addressing Goal #1: 1. One strategy I am going to use is the Remind 101 app. Students will join the app and if assignments and quizzes are incomplete or done poorly I will contact parents to join the app. 2. Another strategy I am going to use for students handing in assignments on time is to give them a little more time in class to complete them. 3. For students who do not hand in assignments I need to address them personally and ask them for the assignments. 4. If any students have assignments that are still not handed in they will have to come in for mandatory flex time on Flex Thursdays. They will have to work on assignments during this time and if they do not have the assignment with them I will be giving them a new one that they have to work on until it is done. 5. If students are still missing assignments, I will be personally contacting the parents with a phone call home and possibly an email as well. Communication with parents is one of the most important aspects of a students success. This is why I may want parents to join the Remind 101 app. (Great idea!)
Strategies for addressing Goal #2:
1. One way I am going to achieve this goal is by going through all my unit plans and putting in my flex/even/odd days so I know what days I am losing. I will also keep in mind that this may not account for all the instructional days we are going to lose due to other activities that the school may plan. 2. I will also have a time stamp on all my learning activities that I am teaching that day that will help me guide the time line along. 3. I will always be at least a week ahead in my planning for the week so students will have at least a heads up on what is to come for their week. So they will have plenty of time to study and work on assignments. 4. I will have a calendar at the front of my classroom showing what is coming up in the next week for a visual for my students - and myself as well. 5. At the beginning of the class, I will go through what we are doing that day so the students know what is going to happen and so I stay on track. One important thing that I have learned so far is to be flexible. If something may take too long then I will move it to the next day or, if it is an activity, remove it completely. Students need time to work on their assignments in class, which will help the completion rate of
assignments improve as well.
C. Indicators of Progress (How I will know Im achieving my goals).
Indicators of Progress for Goal #1: 1. At least 95% of my students have their assignments handed in on time. 2. Within a week of assignments being due, students will have their assignments handed in. 3. Marks will be put into teacher logic every Friday to let parents know if their child is missing assignments. Indicators of Progress for Goal #2: 1. My daily lessons and my unit plans are lining up a lot better. 2. Students success rates in understanding content materials are higher. 3. My schedule is updated daily and posted for students on the board. D. Timeline for Completion. 1. By the end of October I would like to have a 95% completion rate of assignments done and, for the students who do not have assignments completed, ensure I have contacted their parents and have given them the resources to complete those assignments. I would love to reach a goal of 100% completion rate of assignments by the end of my practicum. 2. By the end of my practicum I would like to be on track with where my Teacher Mentor wants me to be at. I am about a week behind in all my classes according to my unit plans. Taking a daily account of where I am and adapting to the different variables that will be present during my practicum will help me achieve this goal.
