Final Design Proposal

We decided to use a decision matrix to choose the brainstormed idea that would
become our final design. Noah and Osric buth got a 15 and then Daniel and I were left
to vote. Daniel voted for Noahs design and I voted from Osrics design creating another
tie and leaving the only option of flipping a coin to which Osrics idea won.

Design
Modifications
During the
creation of our

final design we made several modifications for a variety of reasons. In the sketch we
had expected there to be a premade crank in the VEX kit, however there wasnt so we
had to build one and it worked fairly well. One downside was that it was difficult to hold it
in certain areas while turning it. Another modification added to the design was the
gearbox which we added to keep the beveled gears in and at the same level as the
other gears. We chose to move the crank and beveled gears to the right side so that
they didnt touch the gears which worked well because there was more space and room
for everything to operate smoothly. A bridge between the spool and gear system was
added to keep the two together, we decided not to tighten the screws to aid in quick
disassembly for storage. In the sketch we had a paper clip holding the weight and string
together which we later changed to a screw which work much better and could support
more weight.

Final Design Presentation

Apart from the crank being loose the machine functioned well and was able to lift the
weight the full 6 inches in approximately 30 seconds.

Team Evaluation
Noah Zahm followed all the group norms and did a good job with the task he took on of
building the axle and spool system which was his fair share of work. He was always
prompt and present and never had to make up any work.
Osric Nagle carried his fair share of the workload which was constructing the majority of
the gear system and he followed all the group norms. He communicated well and
shared all important information with the group and did a good job with the amount of
work he undertook.
Daniel Deng did a good job with the work that was assigned to him which was the
construction of a crank and the bevel gear box. He followed all the group norms and
was very accurate with the work he completed.
Danielle Morris followed all the group norms and fulfilled all the tasks assigned to
herself which were assistance with building the gear system and recording all
modifications. She followed all the group norms and was always prompt and present.
Post-Mortem (Reflection)
1. It was easiest to determine the mechanical advantage of the gear system
because it was more straightforward. All I had to do was find the number of teeth
on two gears then divide.
2. It was the most difficult to measure the mechanical advantage of the
crank because we couldnt decide on which parts to measure for an accurate
measurement.
3. I would take out the idler gear in the middle of the gear system.

4. I would tighten the crank.
