N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Heather Weaver

Date of Activity: 10/7, 10/15, 10/21, 10/22, 11/6, 11/10
Faculty name: Moutafis

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
The professional activities that I participated in were part of an independent study designed to
equip myself and the rest of the students in the ED preceptorship to be better ED nurses and
prepare us for situations that commonly arise in that department. We attended lectures and
completed competencies on sepsis, neurological emergencies and strokes, the emergency
severity index, pediatric emergencies, and resiliency. We spent most of the time discussing how
to triage these patients, what we would see when they entered the emergency room, and specific
protocols adopted by hospitals for each situation to stabilize, treat, and prepare for transfer. I also
obtained my Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification. The first portion was online and took
approximately 10 hours, and the simulation was in person so that we were able to practice and
debrief as a group on code situations.

Where was this held and what was program/activity length?

The majority of the lessons were taught at the College of Nursing with the exception of one run
through of TPA administration and the Advanced Cardiac Life Support class, which were at the
Main and South Campus hospitals of Banner University Medical Center, respectively. In total,
the professional activities accumulated approximately 45 hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

This was an incredibly valuable experience for me. I definitely felt like during the time I was at
the hospital for my preceptorship that I was better prepared for the type of situations that I would
see. Hearing about it, seeing it, and then being able to discuss it really helped it all come full
circle and helped me to better understand how to react, which also increased my confidence
while I was there. I also know from speaking to the charge nurse at the hospital that the training
that I received as part of the independent study is going to give me a leg up when it is time for
interviews and hiring and will make me a more desirable candidate.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
I absolutely would recommend this experience in the future. As I addressed in the previous
question, everything that I learned only benefited me in my preceptorship and will continue to
benefit me when I graduate and start my career as a nurse. I think this experience was especially
helpful for the ED group because we never had a class specific to the ED about what we would
see and experience there as we did with OB or mental health for example. I hope that this
program continues to grow because even in its initial stages it has been so helpful for me
personally.
