Self-Assessment: How the Article is Important for Writing 39C

As I read the article, The Teen Who Exposed a Professors Myth I gained a substantial
amount of information about the job inequality Irish Americans were facing in the 19th and 20th
century. It is quite hard to grasp that discrimination in the United States was not just African
American individuals but for the Irish as well; it is eye-opening since students do not learn this
kind of injustice happened not even one hundred years ago, much less that it happened in our
beloved country. With todays education system what we can learn is oh so limited. In my prior
elementary, middle school, and high school classes, not once did I learn about the difficulties the
Irish had, especially since their discrimination occurred when America was in its peek of
technological and economic growth. I learned that even though we do not study a certain subject
in our school, it does not mean that event at no time occurred. Sometimes acquiring the truth
behind false statements like this articles is only possible if ones own self interest goes above and
beyond the truth to find what has been deeply hidden. In my opinion it can be difficult since
topics about discrimination in the work field like the one Rebecca Fried discovered to be true is a
topic that is not easily discussed in todays public setting or amongst individuals daily
conversations.

Nowadays, with the ability to access high speed internet in nearly any location, one can
quickly google news related articles or events that happened ten, a hundred, even thousands of
years ago and even events that are occurring at this very moment. It is impossible if one does not
know what the media consist of, for example from this year's trending music artist to the recent
Muslim student, Ahmed Mohamed, who built a clock and was decriminalized leading it to
change history; not only his voice was heard but million of others in the Muslim community all
thanks to articles, news reports, social media, etc. This is an astonishing way to see how research
on a subject can now be accessed anytime and anyplace. Now if someone from the future were to
decide to write that this decriminalization never took place, there is actually proof now unlike in
the past where the Irish people had no voice and no evidence to show what had actually
happened.
To continue, with this article I got curious on how many readings I have read that might
have been inaccurate, but since one has gotten accustomed to believing everything someone says
just because its quoted by a famous philosopher or written by a Professor it does not always
make the article correct. An example I can relate to not trusting everything I see or hear from the
news since each news station formats their diction and viewpoints to format their viewers best
interest. With this being done the truth either gets dramatized or falsely misinterpreted causing
various arguments and discussions in the making. Thankfully, having this type of recognition of
identifying reliable sources is extremely beneficial to my future career goals since i am planning
on pursuing a criminology and psychology Masters degree. With these majors an example where
it can relate to the article read is if a hit and run crime were to be committed yet witnesses say
that, Nothing occurred or They didn't see anything then my best move is to do what Rebecca

Fried did and investigate some evidence about the person, pictures if possible that could have
been captured by the streetlights surveillance or by reading the police report to see if any bit of
evidence can be used in my advantage. In essence, if I do the appropriate examinations and not
just believe what was said then I would be able to find out the truth of the crime and find the
murderer. By re-examining this article it has caught my attention that all it takes is one persons
intellectual curiosity to prove a point or in Rebeccas case to expose a claim that was untruthful.
In conclusion, I am aware that my research is probably not up to standards since i wasnt
guided with many research assignments in my past writing classes and if I was they were not
graded adequately because I knew of my mistakes, yet they were never brought forward. This
being said I know research will come into play when there is a topic I need to go into detail to
discover the truth. My objective for writing 39C is to go step by step by using rich description in
my writing in order for it to progress along the way. My sentence fragments and grammar are
also my main focus this quarter since my writing will be enhanced as I figure out how to
rephrase other peoples work and learn how to cite correctly. In conclusion, The Teen Who
Exposed a Professors Myth was quite an eye-opening news story since it gave me motivation to
exceed my potential by actually going above and beyond the work required by not just looking
something up from one source, but various different ones like, online articles, books,
magazines, movies, etc. Finally, this article made me realize I will definitely not need to
procrastinate in this research writing class since research is an area where great writers take the
most time on in order for their work to be credible and respected by others.
