Abstract from author:
"Market orientation" is a term popularized by marketing practitioners to indicate
the extent to which a firm is market driven. This presumed linkage between market
orientation and profitability has caught the attention of scholars, but, surprisingly, only
two prior studies have reported a positive association between the two. Given the special
relevance to the hotel industry of being market driven, we believe this industry provides
the ideal setting for demonstrating the link between market orientation and performance.
This research examines this linkage in the hotel industry. The results of our study suggest
that market orientation is positively and significantly related to innovation, subjective
performance, and objective performance. This result yields a number of useful ideas
about how to harness the power of the marketing concept.

Before starting a hotel business you need to know what you are getting into, hence the
first resource. Bear in mind that you need to carefully observe your business plan and
your organizational skills. There are a lot of kinds of hotels that one can go for when
starting in this business, therefore is advisable to do research and determine what kind of
hotel business is most advisable for you depending on your budget, long term vision, who
you are marketing for and the return of investments. In addition, when choosing your
business is advisable to stand out from already existing competitors. Make sure that your
business is successful in the same areas that your competition is so you ahead of the game
before you have even started. Lets continue with a little about who you are marketing
for. When dealing with guest service it seems very nice to the costumer to make the guest
experience with a personal touch. For that reason, you need to know in advanced who do
you want your audience to be so you are able to cater to them and make them relate
better. Going back to the return of your investment, there are a lot of areas youll need to
cover. You need to plan your money right. How much money will you spend to begin
with? How much are you spending on a monthly basis? Having a plan will help you to
actually notice how long it will take to to get back the money you spent starting out and
how much profit is the business currently leaving you. Finally you need to have in mind
your management. Who will you put in charge of each department and how aspects of the
business will be managed. This way you'll have staff report back to you so you know
exactly what's going on.

This article starts pointing out that no plan is viable without some form of
research. Especially if one requires outside investment. It indicates that one will need to
demonstrate that they have done a feasibility study for your new hotel concept.
Feasibility means the possibility of doing it. It will be helpful for the planner to put their
own ideas on paper and level them against the market (the competition) to determine the
chance of success but this article helps to actually get it started. Starting with a generic
Market Study, Business Sources what creates the demand in your market?, Competitive
Analysis you need to make a detailed overview of your competition, Development
Pipeline what other hotels are planned to be constructed and open in your immediate
area? And last but not least Profit & Loss Statement how much money will your hotel
make. Investors are logically keen to know what kind of return on investment to expect.

Starting a hotel as a business can be a challenging but lucrative responsibility.

Youll want to spend sufficient time researching and planning before taking the task
because theres plenty of competition. How to start a hotel business? This piece points
them out by steps and explains them but as a summery I will just state the steps:
Step 1 Decide early on what type of hotel accommodation youll offer.
Step 2 Write a business plan.
Step 3 Apply for permits and licenses.
Step 4 Remodel, renovate and redecorate.
Step 5 Advertise and market.
Apart from those, you will need several important things to get started like a
location, liability insurance, a website, and the hotel staff. When starting at a hotel
business its possible to buy into a well know franchise but know that that will require
yearly fees. Also this business attracts a lot of immigrant workers (according to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics), you will definitely want to make sure that all the staff have
the correct work permits. In addition, due to poor economies, have promotions early on
because new hotels have the tendency to not be very profitable starting out. Set money
aside as a safety net during the start-up years.

If you want to market your hotel more effectively youll probably want to realize
some of these business strategies to help you out. Your hotel marketing plan should be
productive and focused on the most important elements, also it should be updated
regularly (say once a year) and be coherent with the general business strategy.
Preconditions, observe your hotel from a high angle and to ask yourself important
questions such as: Who are our target audiences? What are our Mission and Vision? Why
should guests come to our place, rather than go to other hotels? How are we
differentiating ourselves from our competitors? What are our products and services?
Once you have answers for these questions then can you begin drafting goals with
different employees from respective sectors of your hotel for your marketing strategy.
You need to develop certain measures for the four Ps: Product, Price, Promotion &
Place. This process also has the advantage of giving different departments the chance to
better understand the work of their colleagues, as they search to include everyone into a
general business strategy. Performance reviews are necessary when not wanting to be
outdated, which in the hotel business can easily happen overnight. A performance review
lets you know if your previous business strategies and marketing efforts are paying off.
Not until your strategies bring about real improvements, your employees work together to
realize objectives, and youve managed to prove a profit, can you consider the
implementation of your Hotel Marketing Plan completed successfully.
