Throughout this scrapbook project I have encountered many

interesting topics and articles regarding environmental science. However if I

could pick three articles that interested me the most I would pick Brazils
mining disaster, our environmental peak, and finally how Sweden plans to
completely cut out fossil fuels.

Brazil suffered one of the worst environmental disasters caused by

man, An interesting article by Juliana Jimenez Jaramillo details about the
effects of the disaster. She provides insight on how a dam busted at iron ore
mine in southeastern Brazil, unleashing 50 million tons of highly toxic mud
and mining waste, covering an area the size of 25,000 Olympic pools.
Brazils environment minister is calling this a disaster prompted by
economic activity but of a magnitude equivalent to those disasters created
by forces of nature. The disaster also caused mudslides that knocked out
roads, cell phone towers, and cut off access to drinking water for a quarter
of a million people.
I really liked this article because it really provides insight on how
oblivious oil companies are to the environment. It also shows how we
just let these big companies do what they want and not put any
sanctions towards them, and they are not held responsible. They

always say it wont happen again but they most certainly know that it
will happen again. Sweden plans to completely cut out fossil fuels. And
switch to a greener alternative such as wind, solar and hydroelectric
power. Renewable energy has promising results and can be seen from
Costa Ricas initiative as well as Hawaiis to sufficient on renewable
energy only in the future. Earlier in the year Costa Ricas energy
demand was met only by renewable energy for 75 days straight. In
Denmark on an exceptionally windy day 140% of the nation's energy
demand was was exclusively produced by wind energy.

I really liked this one as well because it is very respective of the

future. Sweden and the rest of the countries are great examples for other
countries who want to join the coalition to battle climate change.

The final article has to do with our peak environmental impact, He

explained that in the early 1900s we were cutting down trees like nobodies
business, and in the 1980s we hit our peak demand for wood. Though at the
time we switched to coal for heating and for production means letting trees
and forests grow back. Though our forests have begun to grow back again
that does not change the fact that fossil fuels are not ruining our

environment. Its time for a change and has to include the environment as a
trade off.

The other article I really liked has to do with Sweden and how they are
wanting to completely want eliminate fossil fuels from the country.
