FRANCISCO: Bernardo?
MARCELLUS: It is offended.
[Exit Ghost.]
MARCELLUS: 'Tis gone, and will not answer.
'Tis strange.
[Enter the King, Queen, Hamlet, Polonius, Laertes, Lords, and Attendant.]
HAMLET: [Aside.] A little more than kin, and less than kind!
QUEEN: If it be,
No more.
As watchman to my heart.
[Enter Polonius.]
[Exeunt.]
[Enter Ghost.]
[Ghost beckons.]
HAMLET: Murder!
Mine uncle!
[Exit.]
[Exeunt.]
More than his father's death, that thus hath put him
My too-much-changed son.
[Enter Polonius.]
POLONIUS: My good liege,
[Reads.]
Ophelia,'
HAMLET.'
HAMLET: Were you not sent for? Is it your own inclining? Is it a free visitation? Come, deal justly with
me: come, come; nay, speak.
HAMLET: Why, anythingbut to the purpose. You were sent for; and there is a kind of confession in
your looks, which your modesties have not craft enough to colour: I know the good king and queen have
sent for you.
HAMLET: That you must teach me. But let me conjure you, by the rights of our fellowship, by the
consonancy of our youth, be even and direct with me, whether you were sent for or no.
HAMLET: I will tell you why; so shall my anticipation prevent your discovery, and your secrecy to the king
and queen moult no feather. I have of late, but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth, forgone all
custom of exercises; and indeed, it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth,
seems to me a sterile promontory. What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! how infinite in
faculties! in form and moving, how express and admirable! In action how like an angel! in apprehension,
how like a god! The beauty of the world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this
quintessence of dust? Man delights not me; no, nor woman neither, though by your smiling you seem to
say so.
HAMLET: Gentlemen, you are welcome to Elsinore. You are welcome: but my uncle-father and aunt-
mother are deceived.
HAMLET: I am but mad north-north-west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw.
[Exit Queen.]
[Enter Hamlet.]
There, my lord.
OPHELIA: My lord?
HAMLET: That if you be honest and fair, your honesty should admit no discourse to your beauty.
OPHELIA: Could beauty, my lord, have better commerce than with honesty?
HAMLET: Ay, truly; for the power of beauty will sooner transform honesty from what it is to a bawd than
the force of honesty can translate beauty into his likeness: this was sometime a paradox, but now the
time gives it proof. I did love you once.
HAMLET: Get thee to a nunnery: why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent
honest; but yet I could accuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not borne me: We
are arrant knaves, all; believe none of us. Go thy ways to a nunnery. Where's your father?
HAMLET: Let the doors be shut upon him, that he may play the fool nowhere but in's own house.
Farewell.
HAMLET: Get thee to a nunnery, go: farewell. Or, if thou wilt needs marry, marry a fool; for wise men
know well enough what monsters you make of them. To a nunnery, go; and quickly too. Farewell.
HAMLET: God hath given you one face, and you make yourselves another. Go to, I'll no more on't; We
will have no more marriages: those that are married already, all but one, shall live; the rest shall keep as
they are. To a nunnery, go.
[Exit.]
[Exeunt.]
ROSENCRATNZ: Your behavior hath struck her into amazement and admiration.
HAMLET: O wonderful son, that can so stonish a mother! But is there no sequel at the heels of this
mother's admiration?
ROSENCRANTZ: She desires to speak with you in her closet ere you go to bed.
HAMLET: We shall obey, were she ten times our mother. Have you any further trade with us?
ROSENCRANTZ: Good my lord, what is your cause of distemper? you do, surely, bar the door upon your
own liberty if you deny your griefs to your friend.
HAMLET: 'Tis as easy as lying: govern these ventages with your finger and thumb, give it breath with
your mouth, and it will discourse most eloquent music. Look you, these are the stops.
GUILDENSTERN: But these cannot I command to any utterance of harmony; I have not the skill.
HAMLET: Why, look you now, how unworthy a thing you make of me! You would play upon me; you
would seem to know my stops; you would pluck out the heart of my mystery; you would sound me from
my lowest note to the top of my compass; and there is much music, excellent voice, in this little organ,
yet cannot you make it speak. 'Sblood, do you think I am easier to be played on than a pipe? Call me
what instrument you will, though you can fret me, you cannot play upon me.
[Exit.]
[Enter Polonius.]
[Exit Polonius.]
[Enter Hamlet.]
[Exit.]
Tell him his pranks have been too broad to bear with,
[Enter Hamlet.]
QUEEN: Nay, then, I'll set those to you that can speak.
QUEEN: What wilt thou do? thou wilt not murder me?
QUEEN: No more.
[Enter Ghost.]
[Exit Ghost.]
HAMLET: Ecstasy!
Refrain to-night;
[Pointing to Polonius.]
[He pauses.]
[Enter King.]
[A noise within.]
[Enter a Gentleman.]
[A noise within.]
Give me my father!
Of my true mother.
KING: Dead.
Pursu'd my life.
It may be death.
[Enter Queen.]
To muddy death.
[Exit.]
[Exeunt.]
[Enter Priests &c, in procession; the corpse of Ophelia, Laertes, and Mourners following; Hamlet, King,
Queen, their Trains &c.]
LAERTES: What ceremony else?
[No reply.]
As to peace-parted souls.
Of blue Olympus.
[To Hamlet.]
[The Attendants part them, and they come out of the grave.]
The cat will mew, and dog will have his day.
[Exit.]
HAMLET: I do not think so; since he went to France I have been in continual practice: I shall win at the
odds. But thou wouldst not think how ill all's here about my heart: but it is no matter.
HORATIO: If your mind dislike anything, obey it: I will forestall their repair hither, and say you are not fit.
HAMLET: Not a whit, we defy augury: there's a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now,
'tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now.
[Enter King, Queen, Laertes, Osric, Lords, and Attendants with foils.]
KING: Come, Hamlet, come, and take this hand from me.
KING: Give them the foils. Hamlet, you know the wager?
Your grace has laid the odds o' the weaker side.
HAMLET: One.
LAERTES: No.
HAMLET: Judgment!
LAERTES: Well;again.
[They play.]
[Laertes wounds Hamlet; then, in scuffling, they change rapiers, and Hamlet wounds Laertes.]
[Dies.]
[Laertes falls.]
Follow my mother.
[King dies.]
[Dies.]
I am dead, Horatio.
To tell my story.
[Dies.]
