Interactive Read Aloud Lesson
Grade:
5th Grade
Rationale:
Students will organize their learning experience through a KWL
chart
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.2
Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported
by key details; summarize the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.3
Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical,
scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why,
based on specific information in the text.
Objectives:
Students will be able to gather information about a topic they
may be unfamiliar with by asking questions and listening for the
answers in the read aloud
Procedures:
The students will each be handed a KWL chart while the teacher
has a blown up version on the Smartboard. To refresh their mind
the teacher will explain each part of the chart and what
information should be added in each section
The teacher will first introduce the book Men of the
Constitution by Pamela Bradbury to the students and ask them
just by look at the cover and the title of the book, what do they
know about the constitution.
As the students are giving their responses, the teacher will
record them in the K section of the KWL chart while the students
record it on their individual sheets.
Now that we have gathered some information about what we
already know about the constitution, I want you to turn to a
partner to discuss and write down three things in the W section
of your KWL chart on what you want to know about the
constitution, the people involved, where it happened, or why it
happened

Once the students seem to be done writing down their ideas the
teacher will begin to read the book. While I am reading this
book I was you to write down two things in the L section of the
KWL chart of what you have learned about the constitution while
I am reading
Once the book is finished the teacher will turn to the students
and ask them to share what they have learned. As the students
share their facts, the teacher will add them to the KWL chart that
is posted on the Smartboard and the students will copy them
onto their individual sheets.

Materials:
Men of the Constitution by Pamela Bradbury
Copies of KWL chart for students
Smartboard
KWL chart document to pull up on the Smartboard
Assessment:
Teacher will collect the KWL charts and using a rubric will make
sure that the chart is filled out correctly.
Teacher will look for 2 or 3 statements or questions under each
letter for it to be complete.
Differentiation:
For students who have a difficult time with handwriting, the
teacher will provide them with the KWL document on a laptop for
them to type in their responses instead of writing.
Future Connections:
The students will later be asked to write a constitution of their
own. They can use what they have learned about the constitution
to help them develop an effect constitution that they will be
writing in their writers notebooks.
