Lesson observed: Kristen Fuller

Purpose: To provide a framework for reflection and collaborative conversations about


teaching and learning.
Directions: Read over the guiding questions below. As you view the video, jot down notes
about what you see and hear. Note any examples or evidence to support answers to the
questions.

1. How are students involved in the
lesson?

involvement?

Notes
Very involve and engaged in the reading of
the book, Kristen does an awesome job of
asking them questions and getting them
interested in the book.
The students had questions that Kristen
allowed them to ask as she read the
engagement book.
The students were very engaged as Kristen
wrote the clothing items on the board, they
would sound out the first letter of the words
and help Kristen know what letter to write. I
thought this was great because they were
clearly engaged.
She also allowed the students to walk up to

her tub of different clothing to pick out


clothing items in each season that got them
directly involved in the lesson.

students to
ask questions? What kinds of

were they asking?
How did the teacher help
students make connections to
what they were learning?

Asked the students what they saw on the


cover of the book and what they thought the
book might be about.
She allowed the students to share their
experiences with the different seasons.
She asked the students about things that
they did during the summer.
Asked the students if they had ever touched
snow and explained how the cold of the snow
relates to why people wear warm clothes in
winter.
o All of these things successfully helped
the students make connections to what
they were learning.

3. Describe the interaction in the


classroom.

Kristen has good interaction with the


students, she speaks to them on their level to
help them understand.
The students interacted with each other as
well while they talked about the seasons.
Kristen did a good job of making sure all of

the students were engaged and participating


in the lesson, she did not call on the same
student over and over.

Kristen clearly stated the learning outcome
that they were going to learn about the how
their clothing changes according to the
season.
I could tell that the students were learning
because as Kristen asked them questions
about the seasons and what people would
wear, they were able to point out examples
of the different clothing items in the book.

I was unable to see in the video if the


learning goals were achieved since it only of
the engagement and teaching but it seemed
like the students were on the right track to
achieve the goal set by Kristen.
The teacher monitored student progress
throughout the lesson by asking questions
and gauging students responses.

I think that the teacher was co-learning with


the students. She would model the thinking
that the students should have as they
thought through her questions, and stay on
their level as if she was learning this right
alongside them. I feel that this was effective
because the students saw her as their
partner and knew that she was going to help
them master the concept.
The content was presented through nonlinguistic representation. She created a chart

o She interacted with the students by
getting their input and guiding them
toward the right answers.
I feel that there was an adequate explanation
of the concepts since Kristen used many
different ways to show the students the
concept. She used a book, a chart, and
physical clothing items to help the students
see the concept multiple ways.
She asked the students about what
clothing items they thought people
should wear. Then she asked where she
should put the items on her chart of the
seasons.
The students were very eager to answer
questions so there was not a lot of wait
time.
She asked the students to compare the
seasons such as, Is the winter warmer
or colder than the fall?
The students came up to the bucket to pull
out clothing items that could be worn with a
particular season. This allowed them to
visualize and actually touch what they were

Kristen did an awesome job of getting and
keeping the students attention. She sang a
little song about putting their hands in their
lap at the beginning.
She reminded students to go back to their
letter on the carpet when they started
moving too much.
She praised the students appropriately when
they did things correctly and understood the
concept.

3 Affirmations based on the observations and evidences above


1.I loved the way you started the lesson and managed the students.
They knew what to do right away and you were able to remind
them of the letters they should be sitting on when they started
moving too much.
2.You have an awesome way of staying on the students level. It is
like you are learning with the students as you model how you

would think about the concept, and I felt like it was perfect for your
students!
3.You had great resources to teach your concept in multiple ways! I
loved that you had the book, chart, and actual clothing items. This
engaged the students and allowed them to make more connections
to what they were learning, it made it a memorable lesson!

2 Questions for Consideration


1.Are there more ways that you could check for student
understanding throughout the lesson such as maybe having the
students give a thumbs up about how they are feeling about the
concept?
2.Could using examples and non-examples have helped the students
have an even clearer understanding of what is and is not an
appropriate clothing item for each season?

I think it would have helped the students understand the concept


even more if you ask them to explain their answers more often,
such as when they would give a clothing item to wear, if you had
them explain their thinking a little more.
