2.2 Write a friendly letter complete with the date, salutation, body, closing, and signature.
I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or Principle):
1. How to write a Thank You Note
2. Students write compositions that describe and explain familiar events and experience
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):
Given a completed Personal Planning Chart, students will write a thank you note for a gift or kind gesture
that meets the format criteria. Students will be able to write down date, salutation, body, closing and
signature and include sufficient descriptive content. Students will show knowledge of the correct format of
the thank you note. Also, Students will demonstrate their prior knowledge of the use of words and
meaning
DOK/Cognitive Rigor Level: Student should be able to demonstrate the use of words in a complete
sentence. Students need to be able to use the correct format of the thank you note, to include words that
help the reader understand how grateful they are.
Language Demands: Arrange Students in groups with native speaking English Language students to share
ideas and comments and help each other with proper use of word structure. Also, make available
planning chart of words, to help students select options when having difficulties in selecting a word to
use.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION: We are continuing our lesson from the unit: Written
Correspondence. The lesson that comes before this lesson is on Friendly Letters, and then the lesson
that follows after this lesson is on Letters Requesting Information.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activity):
Anticipatory Set: We will read the book on Thank you, Miss Doover by Robin Pulver and then I will
ask question to each students to share with their partner two things for which the boy was thankful.
Student friendly objective: By the end of our lesson you should be able to use the correct format in
writing a Thank You note by choosing words that makes meaning to your sentences

Purpose: Students will be able to write a thank you note to show appreciation to someone who has
done something nice for them or has given them a special gift. Students will be able to learn the
importance of showing appreciation to people who do nice or helpful things for them.
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology With Student Activities):
Step #1: State the purpose of Thank You Note
a. T input I would state the importance of expressing gratitude on a Thank You Note when someone
does something nice
a. T model I will point and show student the note about Jack being thankful for receiving stationery set
that he really liked.
b. Student response: Check for understanding by asking students to think of a time they were thankful
to someone for receiving a special gift and share that information with their group.
Step #2: Explain reason of brainstorming ideas before starting any note
a. T input I will explain to students that it is always good to brainstorm ideas before starting any note
or letter
a. T model I will show visual cards of words for student to include in their thank you note
b. Student response: Check for understanding by choral response by having students sound out the
words they see on the card
Step #3: Creating a Thank You Note has five parts
a. T input I will show students the five parts of a thank you note that includes date, salutation, body,
closing and signature.
a. T model I will demonstrate the structure of a thank you note
b. Student response: Check for understanding by having students ask questions and tell their partner
the person they would like to write a thank you note to and what that person did for them.
Step #4: Have students work on their Thank You Note
a. T input I will refer to the thank you note example and point out the date that shows when the letter
was written, for students to write their own recent date. I will explain the meaning of salutation and
where it fits on the note. I will also explain why the body is one of the important parts of the letter
because it tells exactly why you are thankful.
a. T model I will give examples of salutations on the board that students may use in their note and
point out my salutation Dear, followed by the name of the person they choose. I will point out that the
body part of the note should include at least three complete sentences. Each sentence should start with
a capital letter and end it with a period
b. Student response: Check for understanding by looking at students filling out their chart by writing
todays date, a salutation and the name of the person they are writing to and the gesture or gift they
received in their body paragraph and sharing it with their partner.
Step #5: Writing the Closing and Signature part of the Thank You Note
a. T input I will use the thank you note example and explain the last two parts of a thank you note
a. T model I will demonstrate to students that the closing lets the reader know you are finished with
the note and give some examples like Sincerely and Your friend. I will explain and show that the
signature shows who sent the letter.
b. Student response: Check for understanding by having student write the word they will use for
closing and have each student read their thank you note. Student will be encouraged to ask questions.

C. APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection): For guided practice, Students will be
given their personal planning chart which will help them write the thank you note. Students will also be
reminded to use the correct format of the thank you note, to include words that help the reader
understand how grateful they are and to use complete sentence.

V. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES (Methods For Obtaining Evidence Of Learning):
Formative: My students will be able to make a thank you note and I will collect the thank you note
looking for correct format and well organized content.
Summative: At the end of the lesson, my students will be given a test to check for proper understanding
of proper noun, capitalization and punctuation. My student will be given a test to write a letter using the
prompt given by the teacher following the format of the thank you note
VI. ACCOMMODATIONS and/or MODIFICATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL LEARNERS
To accommodate individual learners, I will assign seat for students with hearing
difficulties to seat close to me and will have a supportive partner that will help him or
her. I will also speak clearly and at a normal tone throughout the lesson. I will help
my students understand better by using visual aids throughout the instructional
sequence by pointing and going back to the examples on the board. Most
importantly, students will be given additional time to discuss materials with other
students to increase understanding. I will provide student with samples to help them
see what a thank you note looks like.
