1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.

You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.

You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a

common theme or issue.

You don't need to critique your sources

You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)

You need to provide background information such as history and

definitions

Brief Literature Review:

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook while studying psychology at Harvard University.
In February 2004 Mr Zuckerberg launched "The facebook", as it was originally known.
Within 24 hours, 1,200 Harvard students had signed up, and after one month, over half of
the undergraduate population had a profile.
The network was promptly extended to other Boston universities, the Ivy League and
eventually all US universities. It became Facebook.com in August 2005 after the address
was purchased for $200,000. US high schools could sign up from September 2005, then it
began to spread worldwide, reaching UK universities the following month (Phillips,

2007).
The main benefit of Facebook as learning tool increases collaboration
and communication between students and teachers in education. In
contrast, students see Facebook as a self-regulated space for individual
expression and collaborative learning (Rambe, 2012), and a more
conducive environment for communication with staff and peers (Wang
et al., 2012). Educators should take advantage of
these networks to improve the methods and technologies deployed for
distance education and to foster the growth of learning communities.
By repurposing a social networking site such as Facebook as a learning
tool for distance education, current technologies and opportunities for
enhancing teaching and learning at a distance are
explored(Esteves,2012). Tools for education provided through social
networking sites offer specific advantage especially for distance learning, using an
affordable and popular environment. Currently, online social networks are used by
heterogeneous groups with different ages which tend to integrate more and more facilities
offered by these networks in their daily lives (-Bruneel, , De Wit, , Verhoeven, , & Elen,.
2013).

Some of researches showed students dont want to get education on Facebook. One of the
most important findings of this survey is that students dont want to get education on
Facebook, which they use most. They have stated their opinions of the fact that the
education they get in the school or in the private courses is enough and Facebook should
stay as their recreation place (Benzer, , & Gl, 2013). The most important reason why
students spend time on Facebook is to maintain contact with friends. Other concerns,

online social networks are used by heterogeneous groups with different ages which tend
to integrate more and more facilities offered by these networks in their daily lives. There
is no doubt that, with the unprecedented expansion of social networks, personal data
security policies must to be improved and users are have to be better trained to protect
themselves. In recent years several social networking users have been victims of hackers,
spam, malware or phishing (-Bruneel, , De Wit, , Verhoeven, , & Elen,. 2013).

2. REFLECTION:

What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection:

Using Facebook as a learning tool is a new concept in education in 21st centuries. Most of
researchers found out Facebook increases collaboration and communication between all
stakeholders. Some of researchers showed that learners do not want to use Facebook as a
learning tool .They prefers to use the Facebook as personal communication and
collaboration. Also users concern for hacking, being social network victim, and data
security.

I believe that social network such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, You tube channel and
more improve parental and community involvement, communication, and collaboration.
Currently in my school we are using Facebook as a main communication tool. It is very
powerful communication tool to spread the events, news and etc. While we have been
using FB as an our main communication tool to parents we have seen significant increase

attendance of parents to our school events. My next goal is creating YouTube channel and
Instagram account for our school to share our event pictures and videos. Another goal is
sharing our new science curriculum lesson segment and responsive classroom
implementation videos with teachers, students, parents and community members.
