Running head: POPULATION HEALTH IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

According to the census for San Bernardino County (2014), there is a total estimated
population of 2,112,619 people living in the county of San Bernardino. This county is home to a
diversity of people with different race and ethnicity. Based on the census.gov website, there is a
high percentage of those who are Hispanic or Latino that are living in the county, 51.7%. Those
who are white alone make up approximately 77.3% of the countys population. Those who are
black or African American alone make up 9.5%. Asians make up 7.3%, American Indians make
up 2.0%, those with two or more races make up 3.4%, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific
Islander alone make up only 0.5%. The percentages given make up the many races that live in
this county.
These people that live in the San Bernardino county range in different ages. Those who are
five years and under make up a small percent of 7.3%. Those who are eighteen years and under
make up 27.2%, and those individuals who are 65 years and over make up 10.3%. Also of these
individuals of different ages ad race, approximately 50.2% are women, which means that there
are slightly more women in this county then men (49.8%).
Race cannot be described as a trait or characteristic, mainly because not everyone of the
same race may have the same trait or characteristics. Depending on where one may live, they
might distinguish ones race differently. Race is seen differently by different societies. Ethnicity
on the other hand can be defined by ones characteristics. Ones ethnicity can be based on their
religion, language, geographic origins or even cultural norms. Ones culture is something that has
been passed on overtime and is what makes a person who they are.

being affected by hepatitis.

Source U.S. Census Bureau: State and County QuickFacts. Data derived from Population
Estimates, American Community Survey, Census of Population and Housing, State and County
Housing Unit Estimates, County Business Patterns, Nonemployer Statistics, Economic Census,
Survey of Buisness Owners, Building Permits.
According to Healthy San Bernardino, only 74.3% of people living in San Bernardino
County have insurance, and of that percent that does, 79% of females have insurance. More
Females than males have insurance. Of the many races that we mentioned before that live in this
county, the one race which had the highest percent of having insurance are American Indians,
with 89.2%. Which sounds good but there are only 2.0% of American Indians living in this
county. There were 76.0% for African Americans, 67.6% for Latinos, 84.8% for Asians, and
whites made up 81.2%.

Adults with Diabetes, Disabled persons with health insurance. When indicated red, is a sign that
the county is below average to other counties. Yellow is sufficient, and green is good. Those
Adults with health insurance is indicated red with a percent of 74.3%. Good would be 78.7%, the
target for 2020 is a high 100%, meaning they would like all adults to have health insurance.
Those people with a usual source of health care is at 84.2%. 86.7% is what it should be, and
the HP 2020 target is 95%. Adults with diabetes is low when compared to other counties is at
10.6 percent, in order to be good this percent must be lower to 8.6%. There is no HP 2020 target
for this section. Disabled persons with health insurance is at 78.4 percent while the avg. is at
85.9%. The target HP 2020 is his portion is 100%.
When compared to all the other counties measures, San Bernardino County is about the
same. Everything seemed average when compared to all the others, except one. One thing that
surprised me the most was how low the clinical visits were when compared to other counties. All
other counties had at least double digits, while San Bernardino County only had 8.5. That is 8.5
per 100 of the population. There is a very small amount of people who are going to a clinical
visit. This could be why there are so many health problems. Some of these problems, illnesses,
and disease can be prevented before it gets worse but these people are not going for a checkup.
