students to know.*
1. Visual Art: How their families came over to America and
what does their family tree have in common with other
classmates?
2. Literacy: After interviewing their family members the
students should know where their heritage started from
and was the journey difficult or easy to come to America?
3. Social Studies/Relationships: What are the common
topics of why people left their homeland to come to
America?
Lesson Objectives/Goals: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/newteacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1): What you want the students to do. *
1. Visual Art: The students will be able to use a map to show the path of immigration of their families from their
homeland to America
2. Literacy: The students will be able to write at least five interview questions that help them gain information about
their family heritage. Also the students will look into their heritage and talk about what they have learned.
3. Social Studies/Relationships: The students will be able to compare and contrast cultural traditions among classmates
Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) (3-4)
What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (What do they need to already know): The prior
knowledge they will draw upon is what immigration is and how different or similar cultures can be.
Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student
learning: Students will be able to record their interviews on a tape recorder so they can press play and let everyone
else hear the interview.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways: This lesson will encourage
students to solve in divergent ways because they will understand the differences of each culture. Everyone is different
in the world but we are all equal. Does not matter where you come from, once you get to America everyone is equal
and treated fairly.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have
learned something?): The students will know they have learned something when each child talks about their heritage
and where they come from. America is the melting pot for freedom and equality. After everyone is done, I will ask my
students to write down one thing they have learned throughout this lesson.
