Description: This artifact is a photo capturing myself with two youth that I coach on livestock skills and knowledge. The photo was taken at our latest livestock judging contest on December 3, 2015. Throughout the months of June through September I coached three young ladies and one young man. I gave them tips and communicated various methods of handling livestock, particularly beef cattle. Throughout the year they attend activities to test their knowledge and skills such as the photo given as the artifact showing two of the youth pausing to take a picture at the Block and Bridle Judging Contest at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Wisconsin Teacher standard Alignment: This artifact best aligns with Standard 6: Communication, of the Wisconsin Teacher License Standards. Standard 6 states that, the teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom. As a Youth Livestock Coach it is vital for proper communication between myself and the youth that I am coaching. I use various methods to teach my youth such as hands on lessons where they work with the beef cattle to master skills such as showmanship and maneuvering their animal. One of the youth I have started with three years ago and still help her to master new techniques with her cattle for the five beef cattle shows that she attends throughout the year. I was a coach for youth involved in livestock projects and helped to teach methods and skills involved with the management of livestock. Secondary Alignments: KSD4c: Communicating with Families, KSD4f: Showing Professionalism Reflection What I learned about teaching and learning: Through this experience I learned how to use different teaching methods depending on the material as well as the student. I learned the value of being a proper role model, not only demonstrating professionalism but also showing encouragement and respect to all those I work with. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator: I learned the importance of communication. As a main resource for information I was responsible for making sure the youth understood my message. I learned how to properly communicate with various ages. This will carry over to being an educator through the teaching aspect as well as proper communications that is needed to effectively rely messages and information.
