Children love to try new things, which is why the

physical education program at our school is making an
enormous change. Now, your student will have the
opportunity to engage in several new physical activities.
Some of these activities include:
Tae-Bo
Swing Dancing
Badminton
Juggling
Ultimate Frisbee
Our school district is implementing this change in order
to encourage students more active participation in
physical education. This new change helps those who are
intimidated by team sports to become more interested in
being active. One main benefit of this change is that it
helps promote lifetime fitness, opposed to simply
completing a gym class.

Physical activity has several benefits that will

improve the overall wellness of your child. Since
childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions, with
greater numbers of people becoming affected earlier in
their lives, (Howard-Barr) physical activity is becoming
increasingly important for children. Staying active helps
lower your childs risk of:
Obesity
Cardiovascular Disease
Type 2 Diabetes
Other aspects of fitness that can be improved through
physical activity are:
Muscle Strength
Increased Energy
Flexibility
Bone Mass
Improving these things helps reduce the risk of injury,
which helps keep your child happy and healthy.

Family Fun Run/Walk

5K
Saturday, November 15th
Begins at 9 a.m.

To further your childs learning, we have been

working to incorporate curriculum into physical activity.
This allows students to receive more time that they are
active, because they are learning their material while also
getting exercise. We have done this by:
Posting vocabulary lists on gym walls
Discussing Newtons Laws of Motion while tossing
balls back and forth
Counting by twos, threes, and fours while
stretching
Using maps and compasses to go on walks
By adding curriculum to gym activities, students who
learn through activity are more likely to become engaged
in the content. ''Some children just learn better through
more movement than they do sitting at a desk. Some kids
are going to have that 'aha' moment not in the classroom,
but the light bulb is going to finally go on outside (Rich).

While your child participates physical activity each

day at school, it is important that they also stay active
outside of school. There are several ways to get your child
moving at home. A few ways include:
Running a Smile Mile after school
Playing in your front yard
Visiting a park
Participating in a Fun Run
As a way to encourage students to stay active outside of
school, we will post a photo of your child participating in
their favorite activity on our Fitness Wall. This will help
your child feel proud of their exercise, and also encourage
other students to stay active.
As for birthday and party treats, we recommend
that you do not bring in cupcakes, or other fattening
snacks. Instead, we prefer for you to bring in gifts of
pencils or erasers (Mieszkowski). By not providing
unhealthy treats, this allows us to model healthy choices
as class.

Deadline to sign up your

Hiking is an activity that will allow your child to be

active, while also gaining exposure to the science concepts
of nature. A lot can be learned from observing the
wildlife, plant life, landforms, and bodies of water that
you may encounter on a hike. While you are hiking, it is
beneficial for students to bring a journal, so that they can
record observations of their surroundings. Make sure that
when youre hiking you:
Wear comfortable, closed toe shoes
Wear a hat and sunscreen
Bring food and water
Bring a trail map
Contacting the local parks and recreation departments is
the best way to find the closest hiking areas (Physical
Fitness and Exercise). Once you find these hiking areas,
you will be able to receive a hiking map, so that you can
plan your adventure.
