standard:
This KWL chart was completed before the unit lesson on planets. This lesson was completed in a jigsaw
fashion and I was interested to see how the students knowledge would change through the course of the
lesson. Before completing the chart I asked students to think about what they already knew from planets. I
encouraged them to think of books theyve read, shows theyve seen, prior science lessons, and other areas
theyve had experience with planets.
On the first day of the lesson I asked students to write what they already knew, then I asked them to write
questions they had and things theyd like to learn. The KWL charts were kept in their science folder through
the lesson. Following the quiz of the lesson I asked students to complete the chart with information they had
learned. This was a great discussion piece to wrap up the lesson.

Reflection on artifact:
This was the first year I had used the KWL chart with the Space Unit. Last year I had tried the jigsaw method
for the lesson. It was the first year I had done it and I felt it went very well. This year I was able to structure it
better and have the material used more effectively. The KWL charts were very interesting to read over after
the lesson. It showed me what knowledge stuck with the most students. I would like to use these tools together
next year when I teach the lesson again. I would like to have students work together and discuss information
together before presenting with the class. I am interested to see what information students will share, facts
that are discussed, and what information is learned and retained with a peer instruction strategy.
