Introduction
As a future teacher in the general classroom, I will encounter many students and
situations of diverse backgrounds. It is my professional responsibility as a future teacher to
understand and put the TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 competencies
into effect. Being aware of the 13 competencies and how to use them will make you a more
effective teacher. In this paper I will be relating competencies 7 and 9 to chapters 7, 8, 9, 10, and
11 in Teaching and Learning Research-Based Methods fifth edition by Donald P. Kauchak and
Paul D. Eggen (2012).
Communication
`

Competency 007 is the ability for teachers to understand and apply principles and

strategies for communicating effectively in varied teaching and learning context. The chapters
from the book that I greatly associated with competency 007 are chapters7, 8 and 9. The author
gave us a close look into learning in groups in chapter 7 when he discussed the importance of
promoting group work and cooperative learning. I believe this coincides with the competency
because group work requires clear communication, compromise, and appropriate social
interaction. I have also chosen to relate, Direct Instruction, chapter 8, with competency 007
because in this chapter the author covered all aspects of direct instruction. The main subsections
of this chapter covered forms, goals, planning, and implementing direct instruction. Next,

chapter 9, Lecture, is broken down into three subsections, similar to chapter 8, about how to plan
and implement lecture discussions. These relay back to the competency in the fact that in order to
teach a lesson, no matter what type of instruction used, you need to have clear communication in
varied learning context. After reading these chapters I now have a greater understanding and
know the importance behind clear communication when teaching a lesson effectively.
Technology
Competency 009 states that the teacher will incorporate the effective use of technology to
plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students. There are two chapters that
follow closely with this competency due to the fact that the author covered Guided Discussion
and Problem Based Instruction in chapters 10 and 11; and that is exactly what competency 009 is
outlining. I am related chapter 10 to competency 9 simple because guided discussion is relied
heavily on technology. Whether it is the teacher that is using the technology to prepare or for the
students to look up information, technology is depended on in this type of instruction. The next
chapter that relates to competency 009 is chapter 11, Problem Based Instruction. PBI is exactly
what it sounds like. The teacher will present a problem and the students will use their knowledge
or research to solve this problem. Because students will need to use research to help problem
solve it is a much to have technology included in this type of instruction.
Conclusions
The above competencies are framework for which we will run our classroom but, they
help also us determine if we are doing right by the TExES Pedagogy and Professional
Responsibilities. It is important for all teachers and future teachers to know the competencies in
and out because they are essentially our self-assessment o determine if we are running our

classroom correctly. By ensuring I understand and implement these competencies into my

classroom I am doing my future students justice by reaching as many learners as effective as
possible.
