Should off-shore drilling be banned due to the high risk environmental pollution?
Off-shore drilling adds a massive amount un-needed pollution into the earths waters

For many decades our coasts were protected from new offshore oil drilling. Then came
the disastrous Deep-water Horizon oil drilling rig blowout in April 2010 that released
approximately 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. It fouled beaches and coastal
wetlands from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle; killed birds, fish and marine mammals; and
devastated the recreation and fishing-based economies of the Gulf States. These events support
the fact that offshore drilling should be banned because of how wide range the pollution is.

Offshore oil production accounts for about 30 per cent of the total world oil production.
This staggering statistic provides a lot of room for error, such as spillage into the waters causing
them to be polluted with toxins that are harmful to the environment. The major potential
environmental effects from offshore drilling occur from the discharge of wastes, including
drilling fluids, drill cuttings and produced formation water. Massive oil spills that come from

offshore drilling have had entire coastlines filled with contaminations, only giving more reasons
to ban this method to keep the ocean waters safe. Offshore drilling cannot be overlooked
because the amount of species at risk is substantial due to the stupidity of the human race for the
positioning of these drilling spots.

After the recent disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, oil drilling pollution is a hot topic. The
pollution caused by offshore drilling is on the conscience of more and more people. First of all,
this is because all marine life in the area is affected by the oil drilling process, which causes
various pollutants to be released in the water. Oil spills are also a source of serious damage,
which harm not only marine life, but land plants and animals as well. Offshore drilling rigs also
interfere with fishing activities all around. However, it is not just offshore drilling that causes
pollution, because once the oil is recovered, it needs to be stored, transported, refined, etc. This
leads to further risks of accidents and severe damage to the environment.
