CCS- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.D.8 - Solve real world

and mathematical problems involving perimeters of
polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side
lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting
rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas
or with the same area and different perimeters.

Council for Exceptional Children-1.1. Systematically

individualize instructional variables to maximize the
learning outcomes of individuals with exceptionalities.

WI Teaching Standards-The teacher understands how

students differ in their approaches to learning and
creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to
diverse learners.

+Understanding By Design:
Identify Desired Results
Understandings (U)

Essential Questions (E)

Students will understand that

- Area and perimeter is the mathematical
foundation of many real world instances
- Different professions use models or
pictures to solve problems in their fields

Students will know (K)...

-

How might we use area/perimeter? In

what other instances do we need to use
area/perimeter?
How do models or pictures help us
understand that area is made up of units
of measurement?
How does geometry depend on
measurement in order to describe
shapes?

Students will be able to (S)..

How to find the surface area of a plane figure using addition and multiplication
And understand the concept of area as a measurement
Key termsmultiplication, square
units, surface area, perimeter

Apply the concept of area to solve real

world mathematical problems.
Use a wide variety of models to find the
area
Use oral or written language to explain
their understanding of area

Stage 3: Learning Plan

Learning Activities (L)
-Pre-quiz with a few different layouts to check what the
students already know about area and perimeter
-Area and perimeter word study and anchor chart-definition,
how to find it, examples, real world use
-Area/perimeter word sort
-Relationship between area and perimeter (anchor chart)
-Rotation-Kahn Academy (independent), teacher activity (small
group), dice area game (w/ partner)
-Challenge-How would our table look if everyone could sit at our
table?
-Task card activities-real world uses for area and perimeter
-Performance task-Build our City Park
-Area and Perimeter Assessment

Rationale for Teaching

Accommodations/
Extra
time for tests:
Adaptations/Strategies
[Autism, ADHD, SLD]
Students with disabilities can benefit from more time to complete a test.
This will help Students who need more time, cannot concentrate for
extended periods, have health-related disabilities, fatigue easily, special
diet and/or medication needs. Making these accommodations can help
students greatly
Read aloud test
Instructions

Reading aloud Test Instructions:

[SLD, Autism]
Helping a student by reading test instructions out loud can help students
focus on the task that is being assessed instead of having students
struggle with reading the questions. Presentation accommodations
allow students to access information in ways that do not require them to
visually read standard print. Reading aloud will help students focus on

+Rationale for Teaching

Accommodations/
Adaptations/Strategies Cont.
Visual Timers:
[Autism, EBD, ADHD, SLD]
Visual timers help promote independence. Under the guidance of
an activity schedule, learners independently transition from one
activity to another so the use of a timer is a must. This will help my
students stay on task to complete the tasks independently.
Checklists/rubrics:
[SLD, Autism, ADHD]
A checklist is a great tool for all students but they also play an
important role for students with disabilities. For a student with a
learning disability, the simple act of creating and using a checklist
may bring a level of order into their life that was previously missing.
This allows students to focus on the task and organize information.

Rational for Cultural Classroom
Strategies

Communicating Expectations:

Differentiating Instruction:

Classroom rules, small group expectations, individual

expectations

Providing different opportunities to learn in ways that

are responsive to their own communication style,
thought process and ability.

Providing Feedback:

Positive feedback for success in the classroom

+
Self-Assessment

Understanding by Design
Allowed me to know the
exact outcome I wanted for
my students
Differentiating to meet the
learning styles of my
students

Questions that Came Up

Is modifying a test for

students with disabilities a
correct practice and a good
accommodation?

Can I do more to help

students understand the
standards?
