What is a Mole?

What?!? Half a Mole!

That's disgusting!

What other days might be appropriate?

Which is more massive? A mole of basketballs or the earth?

Did you find this answer surprising? Why/Why not?

Let's take our first look at the

Periodic Chart.
This is Carbon. The symbol is C. Its
atomic number is 6 (this is the
number of protons it has, but more
on that later) and its atomic mass is
12.0107 g/mole.
The atomic mass is how much a mole
of carbon weighs.
You should notice that the atomic
mass isn't a round number, make a
guess as to why that is. Remember
why we didn't weigh just one nickel.
Discuss this with your research team and use Science Speak to write your best
guess in the space below.

What is the atomic mass of Cl?
(Element 17)
Go to this link and place the 1 mole sample of each element on the balance
(scale). Use the periodic chart to identify each element. Give the name of the
element, the symbol, and the atomic number.

Got the hang of finding atomic masses from the periodic chart?
Good, now let's try something more involved.

Watch this and then let's https://youtu.be/hY7lzRBylSk

try some problems.
Element Boron (symbol B) has an atomic mass of 10.81 g/mol.
