Name Kerly Anahi Garcia

Class period/section Humanities 1100

museum did you visit? (check one) x Univ. of Utah ___ BYU

Describe
period,

at

least one of the permanent collection exhibits on a theme,

geographic region, or topic)

within the museum.

The Pacific Island section is a really different exhibition because it

represents a very important culture and the main topic for this collection is the
focus in nature and simple things. I was really excited seeing this kind of
artworks because they were made by natural things mostly from wood, some
others had feathers grass for details, the painting in the artworks were made
by pigment, some other artworks had hair on them, fiber was an important
material for these pieces, and a big alligator sculpture that was made by
reptile skin. On the other hand the sculptures were very descriptive in relation
with the Pacific culture emphasizing their connections with nature. The
themes in the collection were clear in the matter of regionalism making the
environment of the exhibition a Pacific Island. Also we can clearly said that
these artworks were handicraft made which make them very valuable.

Give

a brief, one paragraph description of a special, temporary exhibit

help, ask museum staff what these are; they are usually in one

(for

of the first rooms).

They had a temporary exhibition of modern art. It was in the very beginning in
the second floor. These exhibitions had an abstract taste with materials that we use
for different things, but they were used for art and also to get a better understanding
these sculptures had an animation in digital panel in the museum. It was really
different and nice. I would say a dynamic way to see art and find a lot of meanings
for a sculpture or just a different way to make art. Also maybe just something under
the light because it is evaluated as art.

What

do you think the museum administration and/or exhibit curators want

you

to learn or gain from the exhibits you viewed?

In my opinion the main goal of the museum's staff is to make us understand how
valuable are these pieces and the relationships that they make between culture,
time, and regions. Also I think that for them is really important to let us know how
important is to keep these pieces alive for future generations, so for instance they
can see what was art consider in the 1700's or how was the life of the people from
ancient times because the artworks are based on daily life. Additionally that we
need to take care of these pieces without taking pictures because they can lose
their value.

What

kind of information is provided about the works? Where might you

look

for further information if you were interested?

-Organize hourly tours with a specialist of the museum.

-Promote the museum in art universities so they can do further researches.
-Give informational papers for the people that visit the museum.

Choose

several

were drawn
period,

works that particularly appealed to you. Explain why you

to these works. Comment on the subject, style, medium, time

etc. Who were the artists? What message do you think the artists

trying to convey in the works you chose to discuss? This

were

question must be

answered in its entirety.

From a window at 45 Brook St I got drawn for this painting because it has a perfect
symmetry. I can really said that I got interested because its time or period because I
like really ancient art, but the style is really different because in the part of the
British art most of the paintings had wavy forms and this one was all about
symmetric perfect lines building a perfect structure and subject really goes
according to the name of the painting., In my opinion the artist was trying to say that
this is real this is how it really is because it is true it is exactly how a neighborhood
looks perfect and symmetric houses, so the artist is just trying to say this is how it
houses look in this time because maybe it is not very ancient for me and I can still

see that, but when I think about the future generations they will not be able to see
this kind of structures because they are changing.
The Bard Thomas Jones this painting picture me a different landscape because we
usually want to think that everything is good, but this painting really take us out of
the comfort zone thinking this guy better run or he is going to be death. Also the
landscape is realistic, but one way or another is going to die because he also will
fall, so this situation is open to think in 2 different endings. The style is really
impressive for our eyes the time actually match with the painting. This was a difficult
period so it matches with the painting too. In my opinion the artist tries to convey us
that sometimes we have not options and that maybe what we think it can be a very
bad ending can be our best option.
Landscape Capriccio with Tomb of the Horatii and Curiatii, and the Villa of
Maecenas at Tivoli make me think that they just see the palace as the paradise and
that they can just be in the ruins, but they are complicated to reach for people like
them, so this painting has variable impressions represented by visual perceptions.
The author tries to convey us that there is type of places where they define people
so in this case the ruins define poor people and the palace define richness which is
not belong with the ruins. Maybe is trying to say that the society already moved on
and they are finding different horizons to build their future, but still leaving people in
the ruin. The time goes with the explanation of the painting because these were
times that define people with money, so in the painting if you had money you can be
in the nice part, but if you do not have money you deserve the ruins. The period is

clear about bourgeoisie and proletariat which makes the painting really accurate to
describe this period, and the style make this painting a masterpiece to enjoy.
How

did the artworks you looked at relate to material we have discussed

class? (They do relate in many ways, you just need to look for

in

those

relationships).
The artworks of The British Passion of the Landscape were very similar with the
artworks that we saw especially with The fall of Icarus because when I saw these
paintings I was thinking that most of them have scenarios where people are doing
their own things. Additionally some of these paintings are very dramatic so for
instance we can make narrative about them with different opinions and go in
different directions even though sometimes they are not related with the position of
the author, but still it's open for discussion. Also some of the European artworks
were related with the religious paintings that we discussed in class. For example a
piece called the Crucifixion with Saints by Polidoro di Bartolomeo is under the
influence that we studied and under the topic that we discussed that these
masterpieces are not related with our beliefs, but they were important at that time,
so for instance they are still consider art.
What

was your personal reaction to this experience? Would you enjoy

attending this type of event again? Why or why not?

Yes, I will totally enjoy to attend this type of event because I like to learn and I
learned a lot about art. I am not really familiar with art, so this helped to expand my
knowledge about it. I was really excited to do this assignment because art is the fun

part of learning and I would like to do it more often. I totally enjoy my visit to the
museum because sometimes we just think that is just a painting or sculpture, but
the time spend on it, the origin, the influences are really important and valuable.
