Arab Allies Have No Wish to Support Washington's 'Game' in Syria
10.11.
Sputnik
Arab nations, who initially took part in the US-led airstrikes against ISIL, have
grown wary of Washington's scheming in the Middle East and have switched
their efforts to tackle what they perceive as real threats, military expert
Vladimir Prohvatilov told Radio Sputnik.
"Many know perfectly well that the US is not really interested in defeating ISIL.
Washington's true aim is to create a zone of controlled chaos in the Middle East
to deal with geopolitical and geo-economic issues. America's task is to spark a bloody
conflict and drag others into it," the analyst asserted.
Washington's plans for the Middle East, according to Prohvatilov, prompted Canada's
newly elected prime minister to pull out of the anti-ISIL bombing campaign.
Delivering on this promise would mean that Justin Trudeau does not view the
operation led by the US as beneficial for Canada.
This stance is not exclusive to Ottawa, the expert maintains. Many Arab countries
which nominally take part in the US-led efforts share this position.
"People [in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar] are used to high living standards and do
not want to take part in a war. The Saudi Army is essentially manned by Pakistani
mercenaries. Saudi nationals have no wish to fight," he asserted. Washington's Arab
allies have switched their attention to Yemen and see tackling the Houthis as a
priority.
"Riyadh views the Houthis as a threat since they are capable of calling to arms
as many as 200,000 seasoned fighters. The same goes for Jordan and Qatar. They
perceive Yemen as a real threat while ISIL is a subtle game engineered by the US,"
Prohvatilov noted.
Washington's stance towards Moscow's counterterrorism efforts in Syria is also a part
of this game.
"The Americans want the Russians either to stop the campaign (so that Washington
could accuse Moscow of a military defeat or cowardice) or to expand it so that Russia
would bear all the cost" of a major military engagement, he added.

Almost a third of Bulgarian residents, 32 percent, as well as 21 percent of Germans
respondents, think that deploying additional NATO command units in Eastern
Europe would weaken security in the region, a new poll conducted by Populus
exclusively for Sputnik revealed Tuesday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) In early 2015, NATO decided to establish command units in six
Eastern European countries, namely Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Bulgaria and
Romania. The command units are expected to start operating in July 2016.
According to a poll conducted by Britains Populus on behalf of Sputnik International
News Agency and Radio, one in every five Germans (21%) is concerned by the issue

of national security in relation to the potential deployment of NATO command posts

in their country.
Ironically, almost one-third of Bulgarians (32%) are confident that the new NATO
command posts in Eastern Europe will make their country less safe as well.
The highest percentage of those who view the deployment as enhancing their
security was recorded in Poland (49%), followed by Hungary with 38%. In the United
States, likewise, 42% percent of respondents believe that Europe will be better
off with more NATO command posts.
There is also a large percentage of the public who think that the proposed NATO
bases will not change the security situation in Europe. Asked, How will the opening
of NATO command posts influence European security? 28% of all respondents said
that the deployment will have no effect on the situation at all. This figure was highest
in France and Germany, with 33% and 34% respectively, followed by the Czech
Republic with 31%. The United Kingdom had the highest percentage of those who
had no opinion (27%) on the subject.
The poll was conducted by Populus between September 25 and October 15, 2015.
The sample, representative of the general population in terms of gender, age and
geographic location, included 8,000 respondents in total or 1,000 per country (Great
Britain, the US, Germany, France, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland).
The confidence interval for the nationwide data was +/-3.1 percent, with a confidence
level of 95 percent.

A higher percentage of Poles (49 percent) than US citizens (42 percent) believe that
the presence of NATO command units in Eastern Europe will increase security in
the region, a recent survey conducted by Populus exclusively for Sputnik
revealed Tuesday.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) In early 2015, NATO announced that it would establish six
command units in Eastern Europe, namely in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland,
Bulgaria and Romania. The command units are expected to begin operating by July
2016.
According to the poll, some 38 percent of Hungarians view an additional presence
of NATO units in Eastern Europe as being potentially beneficial, while only 28
of German and 26 percent of French citizens consider such a move as likely
to contribute to increased security in the region.
The survey, conducted on September 25-October 15, involved some 8,000
respondents, corresponding to 1,000 in each of the following states: the United
Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic
and Poland.
In 2014, NATO accused Russia of meddling in the Ukrainian conflict and began
to reinforce its military presence in Eastern Europe.

Moscow has repeatedly denied the Ukraine-related accusations and stated that
NATO's increased activities near Russian borders threaten regional and global
stability.
The international public opinion project Sputnik.Polls kicked off in January 2015,
in partnership with Populus, a founding member of the British Polling Council. The
project involves regular surveys in the United States and Europe on high-profile social
and political issues.
