From one airplane, one route, one passenger

and one pilot in 1914, air transport has grown
into a global force for good, supporting
over $2.4 trillion in economic activity. In
2014, commercial aviations 100th year of
existence, airlines transported more than
3 billion passengers and 50 million tons of
cargo over a network of some 40,000 routes.
This activity generates nearly 9 million
aviation-related jobs.

As commercial aviation
enters its second century,
we will face a growing
demand for connectivity
that is likely to outpace our
industrys supply of skilled,
well-trained people.
The IATA Training and Development Institute
(ITDI) is expanding its services to help
aviation businesses develop and retain talent
for the future. In 2015 we will offer more than
40 new training programs to address evolving
areas such as fatigue risk management,
pharmaceutical cargo handling, and unruly
passenger response.
To make our courses more globally accessible
we will open new training centers in Amman,
Buenos Aires and Jakarta and expand our
London and Beijing facilities. Our team is also
committed to raising our game continuously,
with ISO 9001 certification targeted for 2015.

Industry partnerships are of growing

importance to our mission. Our 400 training
partners around the globe include leading
universities, specialized training institutions
and some of the industrys most respected
organizations. We have strengthened
our relationships with Airports Council
International, Eurocontrol, and SITA to drive
training initiatives that will directly support
their respective sectors. And we are hopeful
that the new I-TRAIN program launched with
the International Civil Aviation Organization
will help the industry respond to the global
shortages in skilled air transport personnel
forecast between now and 2030.
In 2015 we anticipate more than 100,000
students and professionals to enroll in our
classes to take advantage of IATAs unique
global expertise. IATA will continue to take
our responsibility seriously as we serve the
needs of the growing and changing global
air transport industry. We look forward to
providing training to the industry as we start
to build commercial aviations second century.

REPRESENTING,
LEADING
AND SERVING
THE INDUSTRY
For nearly 70 years, we have developed the
global commercial standards upon which
the air transport industry is built. Today, we
support key areas of aviation activity and help
formulate industry policy on critical issues.

Introduction

IATA is the trade association for the worlds

airlines, representing 240 members and 84%
of total air traffic worldwide.

We have always valued

IATAs courses and
professionalism. Given
a chance to organize a

AVIATIONS BIG FUTURE

2012

It took our industry 100 years to serve its first 65 billion passengers. Today, experts
predict we will reach another 65 billion in only the next 15.
The worlds air traffic is expected to increase at a constant rate for the next 20
years, creating millions of new jobs and contributing to global economic development.
Although businesses and organizations throughout the industry will benefit from this
unprecedented growth, the industrys infrastructure and workforce will be stretched thin.

One of your key responsibilities at Etihad Airways is to build staff

career paths through leadership development, succession planning,
etc. What results have you seen so far? Over the past few years, we
have focused on aligning our people development strategy with the
growth of the business.

ey to developing a meritocracybased culture within the

organization was the introduction
of a performance management
process in 2009. Since then, we
have also implemented a range of
integrated leadership development
initiatives, enabling our management
team to identify and develop internal
talent systematically. This has
proved a success and in the first
quarter of this year alone, 35 per
cent of vacant roles were filled by
internal talent.
How do training and recruitment
contribute to Etihad Airways
high level of service?
From a recruitment perspective,
we have adopted a simple and
effective people strategy that

focuses on sourcing the right

people, at the right time and
right place, for the right cost.
This is implemented by adopting
various methodologies in the
selection process to identify those
individuals who will contribute
to our culture of winning, have a
can-do attitude, and are capable
of working in a fast-paced and
dynamic environment.
Etihad Airways is preparing for a
large increase in capacity. What
challenges do you expect to face
as a result of this growth that you
will address through training?
With more people joining the
business, we are continuously
reviewing our resources and
delivery
methods
to
meet

the demand for training. We

are currently developing our
e-strategy to include virtual
classrooms, new technologies
at the hub and outstations, and
bite-sized
content
concepts
including mobile learning. We
are also developing our training
partnerships. Partnering with local
and global training and education
institutes is becoming essential to
provide the right development.
Industry
stakeholders
in
many parts of the world are
expected to face a shortage of
skilled labor over the next two
decades. What are your plans
for attracting new people to
your workforce?
The aviation industry within the
Middle East, and the Gulf region
in particular, faces a considerable
challenge. Etihad Airways is
growing at an unprecedented
rate, with over 200 aircraft on
firm order. We are recognized

as an attractive employer both

locally and internationally. Our
workforce consists of more than
140 nationalities from around
the world, with UAE nationals
representing
the
second
largest nationality group within
our organization.
Our people strategy is aligned
to the business strategy. As we
continue to attract global talent
from around the world, we have
focused on developing local
talent. UAE national sourcing
and development is the number
one priority for Etihad Airways
in order to develop long-term
sustainable human resources with
aviation capabilities in the region.
Emiratisation is in fact the only
means by which Etihad Airways
can sustain the rate and standard
at which it is growing.

edEx has always operated on the

principle of putting people first.
This includes not only our customers
but also our team members, the
heart of our success as a company.

that says, I will make every FedEx

experience outstanding. It is more
than a slogan; it is a way of life
that shapes team members daily
actions and is part of our overall
corporate philosophy known as
People-Service-Profit, or P-S-P.
We view P-S-P as a virtuous cycle
that begins with taking care of our
people, who in turn provide excellent
service to our customers. Strong
service results in solid profits and
business growth, enabling us to
further reward and take care of our
people. Our emphasis on P-S-P
spans all operating companies and
governs the overall management of
FedEx worldwide.
FedEx has over 300,000 team

members across six continents

that allow us to serve customers
in more than 220 countries and
territories. We also use independent
transportation providers within our
FedEx Ground and FedEx Custom
Critical networks.
In 2013, our team members
across all operating companies
spent an average of 20.8 hours in
training, up from 15 hours from the
previous year. Training continues to
be the tool that connects our diverse
team of employees worldwide to
our ultimate goal of outstanding
customer service.

How the Industry is Preparing for Tomorrow

The FedEx culture is a shared

understanding about who we
are, how we think and work,
what we do and why we matter.
Training and development play
a key role in our culture and
connects team members across
operating companies, oceans
and regions.

We passionately support our

team members and rely on their
commitment and ingenuity to
connect customers all over the world.
Our operating companies strive to
make FedEx a great place to work,
promoting a strong safety culture
and dynamic, diverse workplace
and providing competitive benefits
and development opportunities. In
return, our team members are loyal
and committed.
Despite their differing locations,
languages and cultures, FedEx
team members are united by the
Purple Promise our pledge to
strive for excellence and deliver
superior customer service.

Citizenship Report

Xiamen Airlines has plans to

double its capacity over the next
5 years. By the end of 2015, we
will have received six new 787s
and started operating a number
of new international routes.
We will also hire an additional
1,300 student pilots, flight
attendants, maintenance, and
administrative
personnel a
trend we expect to continue for
several years to follow.

ith 106 aircraft and more than

3,000 flights per week in 2014,
many would already consider us a

large airline. But, our ambitions will

take us to a new level altogether. If
our staff is to grow at the same rate
as our business, we have to invest
in our training and recruitment
resources today.
2015 will mark a transition in our
operational focus, as we expand
into markets outside of China and
the surrounding region. Our most
pressing challenge is to prepare
our growing operations, customer
service, and sales staff to work in an
international context.
To supplement our internal training
for regulated areas such as safety,
flying principles, flight operations
and maintenance, we are exploring
the use of mobile learning, remote

training and other technological

solutions as well. The classroom
will remain our main method for
delivery, so we are also expanding
our training center to accommodate
more flight simulators and additional
teaching staff.
Though our airline has been
profitable for nearly three decades,
we recognize the need to learn
from the experience of other
businesses and industries to stay
competitive. In addition to our
internal faculty, we are partnering
with specialized universities and
experts who can give us new insight
into the challenges our growing
business will face.
Over the next 15 years, the

worlds airlines will be strained to

keep up with the increasing demand
for air travel and cargo services.
Mainland China and Southeast Asia
will especially drive this growth.
Though some businesses will likely
struggle to build their workforce at
this pace, we believe the outlook for
Xiamen Airlines is more optimistic.
With our average employee aged
31 years, our current talent pool can
lead our airline through the coming
decades. And we already have a
head start thanks to the investments
we are making today.

Our instructor was very professional and friendly,

ensuring that we were at ease and the information
we acquired was relevant. Our instructor did a
great job managing discussions and expectations,
especially since most of us were very experienced
in the subject matter already.
