Mr. Steven Frederickson
Fall-Safe Parachutes LLC

Dear Mr. Frederickson
I would like to apply to the parachute safety testing specialist position you advertised through
Monster.com on November 18. My experience in skydiving would prove to be a valuable asset in the
safe and thorough testing of parachutes your company produces. My extensive knowledge in
emergency procedures for parachute malfunctions would also ensure that your company will maintain a
safe and incident-free work environment.
I first started skydiving when I was in the 82nd Airborne, it was there that I fell in love with the
sport of skydiving. It was during my time there that I earned my civilian skydiving certificate and began
working toward the USPA licenses that have helped improve my skill as a skydiver.
While I was working at Jump Out-A Plane Georgia, experienced my first parachute malfunction.
This was not a bad malfunction and I was able to fix it in a short amount of time. Since then, I have
experienced a total of nine parachute malfunctions with three of them requiring me to cut the
parachute loose and use my reserve parachute.
Two years ago, one of my good friends died in a skydiving accident. This accident made me
begin to look for ways to help reduce the incidents that occur from skydives. That search has finally led
me to your company and the job you posted. With my skill and dedication in skydiving safety, I am
confident that together, we will be able to minimize the number of parachute malfunctions that occur.

Thank you for your consideration.

The AND GH-120 Analytical Balance.

The AND GH-120 analytical balance is a laboratory grade semi-micro balance with a high
capacity micro range used for operation within normal temperature operations (5C-40C).
The GH-120 is capable of measurements up to
120 grams in 0.0001 gram increments. Measurements
can be taken in g, mg, oz, ozt, dwt, ct, mom, GN, m, t,
and tl, with a standard deviation of 0.1mg and a
linearity of 0.2mg. The sensitivity drift is 2ppm/C. It
also comes equipped with counting mode, percentage
mode, and density mode. The balance is capable of
motor-driven self-calibration and adjust its setting
based on environmental changes. It can also be
calibrated by the consumers choice of external
weights.
The balance has a width of 217mm depth of
442mm and a height of 316mm and weighs 8.2kg. The
weighing chamber is 183mm wide, 164mm deep, and
251mm tall. The weighing pad is a 90mm diameter
circle made of stainless steel. The anti-static glass on
both sides and on the top of are capable of sliding open
allowing for easy access to the weighing dish.

Along with the standard weight mode, the balance also comes with a counting and percentage
mode as well as under-hook weighing capability for density measurements and weighing magnetic
substances. The balance comes with RS232 bidirectional communications and Windows communication
tools software (WinCT) to save data directly onto a computer. The balance itself can store up to 200 sets
of data without being connected to a computer.
The balance has a built-in clock and calendar to add the date and time to the output data. It can
be set to do interval time setting of 2, 5, 10, and 30 seconds as well as 1, 2, 5, and 10 minute intervals in
the data memory function.
The balance is compliant with all GLP, GMP, and GCP. The balance also meets ISO regulations
10012 and 17025. This hardware can radiate radio frequency energy and is compliant with subpart J of
part 15 of FCC rules. This balance is also in compliance with EMC directive 89/336/EEC and LVD directive
73/23/EEC.

How to extract and capture hydrogen from water using electrolysis

Caution, Hydrogen is a very flammable gas. Keep hot

objects and open flames away from the container
during this experiment.
Things you will need
Two plastic 2-liter bottles
One small plastic bottle
Water
Salt
Batteries (three or four 9-volt batteries in a chain will work, a 6-volt lantern battery is used in
the examples)
Two balloons
Two Graphite electrodes at least three inches long
Silicon sealant or rubber cement
Two speaker wires (or similar)
Step one
Cut the top and bottom off the small plastic bottle making a hollow cylinder and cut a hole in
each of the 2-liter bottles approximately one inch from the bottom. Make the holes just large enough to
fit the cylinder in.
Step two
Insert the cylinder into the holes and use silicon or rubber
cement to waterproof the edges.
Step three
Cut small holes in the 2-liter bottles between one and three
inches from the bottom large enough to fit the electrodes.
Step four
Insert the electrodes leaving at least one inch on the outside of
the bottles then waterproof the edges with the sealant or rubber
cement. See figure 1 for an example
Figure 1: Electrolysis

Step five
Fill the now-connected 2-liter bottles with water and a couple teaspoons of salt enough to
completely fill the connecting cylinder with water but leaving at least three inches from the top.
Step six
Place balloons over the openings of the 2-liter bottles.
Step seven
Attach a wire to the ends of each of the electrodes.
Step eight
Attach the opposite ends of the wires to the battery. One wire to
the positive, one wire to the negative. See figure 2 for a completed version.

Figure 2: Working electrolysis setup

As electricity flows through pure water, it would separate the water into its
base components of oxygen and hydrogen. Since salt water is used, the sale plays a
part in this reaction as well. The cathode side produces the hydrogen and the anode
produces sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas. The overall chemical formula for this
reaction is 2NaCl + 2H2O 2Cl + 2H2 + 2NaOH. If you are unsure of which side is
positive, the one with more bubbles being produced is the hydrogen. Figure 3 shows
the hydrogen-producing electrode

Prostitution: A Moral Argument for Legalization
Prostitution has been around for so long that it is now referred to as the "worlds oldest
profession," yet it has fallen a long way since the elite "Ganika" prostitutes of India or the temple
harlots of Greece. There are an estimated 40 million prostitutes worldwide, with between 1-2
million operating in the United States. They are often overlooked or merely serve as scapegoats
for many of the problems in todays societies such as human trafficking and the drug trade. Yet,
keeping prostitution illegal is doing nothing to curb these problems. In fact, it helps to spread or
hide them from law enforcement officials. Countries that have legalized and regulated
prostitution have seen drops in assaults, rapes, STDs, and human trafficking, all while saving
money and increasing tax revenue for those governments. To better protect sex workers in
America, gain increased tax revenue, decrease the rates of STDs and human trafficking,
prostitution should be legalized in the United States.
Currently, if two parties agree in an exchange of money for sexual acts, the government
calls this prostitution and will arrest and prosecute both parties involved. If however, you have
the same two parties agree to an exchange of money for sex in a studio with a camera pointed at
them, this is called pornography and all that is required to make it legal are the proper permits.
Pornography is, quite literally, documented prostitution, an industry worth $97 billion.
Pornography is highly controversial, but so is gambling, alcohol, and tobacco. If we can legalize
those controversial issues that arguably help no one, why can we not legalize an issue that could

help improve peoples' lives? Prostitutes will likely be the victim of sexual harassment, rape or
worse during the course of their work. Many people believe this is the fault of the prostitute or
choose to ignore the issue altogether. This position is unacceptable for any society, especially
one that refers to itself as developed. As a society, we are morally obligated to help victims of
abuse, whatever type of abuse that may be.

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/247275835765749389/

Opponents of prostitution claim it is immoral for a person to sell one's body to someone
else for sex. When you consider the abuses these sex workers have to deal with, not only from
some ill chosen clients, but also from police harassment, would they agree it is moral to know of
an abuse and let said abuse continue unabated? Moreover, what one group of people consider to
be immoral may be perfectly normal to another. Homosexuality is a perfect example of this.
Many people consider homosexuality to be morally corrupt, but few homosexuals are likely to
agree. If everyone viewed prostitution as morally wrong, why then are we seeing prostitution in
every major city and town, attracting countless clients from farmers to senators? When one
considers the conditions many sex workers are forced to endure, it begins to look as if those
opposed to legalizing prostitution are the ones acting immorally by allowing people to suffer
through adverse conditions while turning a blind eye.

Workers in the sex industry deserve the same rights as anyone else. These rights include
legal protection against sexual assault, sexual harassment, and rape. Yet the current system
makes it nigh impossible for sex workers to seek these rights without being arrested and charged.
As a result, many of these sex workers choose not to report abuses suffered, effectively allowing
predators to commit the same crime to others without fear of arrest or prosecution. Legalizing
prostitution would eliminate this fear by allowing them to freely seek the help from law
enforcement to combat these crimes, making not only them, but anyone everyone else, safer.
One study from Rhode Island showed a strong correlation between legalized prostitution
and rape cases when, in 1980, law makers accidentally legalized prostitution by removing the
section defining prostitution as a crime in the state criminal code. The law was finally fixed in
2009, however, during that time, the number of women involved in prostitution largely
increased, but the number of rape cases dropped by 31%. John Turley wrote, "When prostitutes
need protection, to whom do we want them to turn - thugs and mafiosi, or doctors and police?" If
we don't provide help for the sex workers, they will continue to use illegal means to gain the
protection they deserve to have, not only as U.S. citizens, but as human beings. With prostitution
illegal, we are sending a message that prostitutes will find no sanctuary if they turn to law
enforcement for help. Prostitutes should not be the exception to the rule of "protect and serve."

http://studentsforliberty.org/blog/2014/04/21/facts-for-liberty-legalizing-prostitution-protects-sex-workers/

The same study from Rhode Island also showed a 39% drop in the number of gonorrhea
cases during the same time period. At first glance, this drop in the rate of STDs seems
counterintuitive, upon closer inspection however, this drop is exactly what one should expect to
see. Once legalized, blood test and condom use would be made mandatory. One example of this
is the legal brothels in Nevada, where workers are required to get monthly HIV and syphilis
testing, as well as weekly tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Additionally, condom use in these
establishments is mandatory regardless of what sexual act takes place. As a result, there has
never been a case of HIV reported among the working girls in Nevadas brothels. If a woman
does contract an STD, the woman is not allowed to work until they are medically cleared. While
cases of STDs are reported, they are not nearly as high as one might expect. Dr. Randall Todd,
the state epidemiologist in charge of tracking STDs said we see very little STD among the
working girls in the brothelsBrothel sex is extremely low-risk, probably a lower risk than to
pick up someone in a bar whom you dont know. On the contrary, the current prosecution
standards in some cities actually encourage prostitutes not to use any form of protection. One
study in April 2012 by the Urban Justice Center discovered that police in New York use
condoms found on prostitutes as evidence against them. It's easy to imagine how this could deter
prostitutes from carrying and using protection thereby helping the spread of STDs.
One common argument against the legalization of prostitution is illustrated by John
Bambenek, the executive director of the Tumaini Foundation, who wrote, "The legalization (of
prostitution) will lead to an untold number of women being forced into sex slavery...women will
be forced into commercial sex work in greater numbers if it were legalized." Here Mr. Bambenek
argues human trafficking will increase if prostitution is legalized. Counter to his claim are
several studies that show quite the opposite. These studies show legalizing prostitution can help

lower the amount human trafficking. Germany has one of the more recent examples of these
studies, in the decade that followed prostitution legalization in 2002, they saw a 10% drop in
human trafficking. This was possible because of a more effective and friendlier relationship
between sex workers and law enforcement. This relationship provides much needed resources to
help uncover human trafficking. These much needed resources can only exist when sex workers
have no need to shy away from law enforcement.
The Netherlands, a country well knows for its legal prostitution in the "red light district"
also notes the benefits of legal prostitution on human trafficking. In 2005, the Netherlands
Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote about legalized prostitution "...it prevents human trafficking,
which is characterized by exploitation, coercion, and violence...The policy is based on the
conviction that strengthening the position of women is the best way to combat sexual violence.
Moreover, abuses are easier to detect when prostitutes operate publicly and legally rather than in
a clandestine subculture." Law enforcement can't effectively fight something they can't find.
Legalizing prostitution will bring many of the women out of the dark corners of back alleys and
into the light of the law. This would allow police to catch human traffickers more easily than if
their victims are too afraid of being prosecuted.
Crime reduction isn't the only upside to legalizing prostitution. Legalization would also
provide much needed tax revenue to state and federal governments. This is something many sex
workers want. Sex workers in Nevada and Italy have petitioned for the right to pay taxes. One
sex worker in Utah, Catherine, when responding to whether or not prostitution should be taxed
and regulated, said "I say it's a grand idea, if it could result in safer conditions, especially health,
I say regulate and tax the shit out of it." Sex workers in Nevada make an average of $3000 a
week. This is after paying 50% of their income to the brothels themselves. Of the sex workers

10

interviewed locally for this paper that revealed their earnings, they averaged in at a highly
respectable $1700 a week. With an estimated 1-2 million US prostitutes, that equals between
$88.4 billion and $312 billion untaxed dollars every year. This figure doesn't include the money
made from the brothels or licensing fees that would be required of all brothels and prostitutes.
On top of all that, the government would save money that is currently spent enforcing misguided
laws meant to stop prostitution. Recent figures put the cost of each arrest for a prostitute at
$2,000. This includes the arrest, jail fees, and court costs, but do not include any cost associated
with locating and arresting prostitutes. In 2010, there were 62,668 arrests for prostitution in the
U.S. That equals out to $125 million spent on arresting prostitutes who are likely just going to
stay in jail for a couple of days, pay a fine, and return to the streets. Money and police hours
better spent on catching violent criminals and drug dealers.
Criminalization of prostitution has been proven to be ineffective and costly. The sex trade
is here and will not leave. By realizing this and making it legal, all involved parties would
benefit greatly. Sex workers would be given a safe environment, protecting them from abuse,
disease, and other forms of mistreatment. It would lessen the burden on law enforcement and the
entire country would be safer in terms of lower rates of human trafficking and STDs. Why do we
find it necessary to tell people who they can and cannot have sex with? As Alan Young put it,
"for sex to be lawful there only needs to be consent, and it should not matter whether consent is
secured by direct payment or weeks of expensive courtship with fine dining and false promises."
Even without the other reasons to legalize prostitution, people should realize that whether they
like it or not, sex between a sex worker and their client is consensual and unless there is a direct
harm to someone else, the government should not waste valuable and increasingly limited
resources regulating private behavior between consenting adults.

Reflection
Throughout this class, I believe that I have learned a good deal of information that will I be able
to use in my work and personal life. Chief among these would be from project 2, presentations. That
project required us to prepare and present, as a group, a presentation to the rest of the class.
Our presentation was on whether or not news media has an ethical responsibility to report the
news accurately or not. When doing the work for this project, we had to organize the information to be
presented in order for the audience to be able to follow the information easily and efficiently. This is
something that I have not had to do before and was experience that has already been useful in the work
life when I had to give a presentation to various senior members at my workplace. This is also information
I am sure I will use again and again in the coming years as I will be required to give more presentations in
the future at my job.
