Buildingtechnique
The coil method: where a long sausage of clay is coiled over itself and then
smoothedover.Thismethodisextremelyversatileandsimpleandhencefrequently
usedforhomemade coarseware. The pot couldalso befinishedoff onthepotter's
wheel, making it difficult or impossible to distinguish from a pot "thrown" on a
wheel.A brokenshardofpottery made with this method will tendtoshowuneven
thickness.
Thepinchpottechnique:thenamesaysitall.
Thrown on a potter's wheel with a heavy flywheel to keep it going at constant
speed. The result tends to be very even, except in points where there is astrong
change in direction, such asbetweenthe base andbody.Fingerprints or lines are
commonifthefinishedpotwasn'trubbeddownbeforefiring.
With a mould: a carefully measured weight of clay would be laid into a
prefabricatedmould.Thisallowedmanyidenticalpotstobemadeinbatches.
