When writing an argue position paper, one must always appeal
to the values of the reader. While the paper may have a specific
targeted audience, it is important to appeal to their and, if there is,
their opposing values by having just the right amount of the three
ways of persuasion. That includes ethos, pathos, and logos. If having
too much or too little of them, the writer can risk unintentionally
offending the reader. If the reader feels their values and morals arent
being addressed, appreciated, or valued, then the reader will grow
disinterested. Another reason why this is important is that just because
the writer stated their specific audience, doesnt mean people who
arent apart of the audience will read it. The writer must be aware of
their purpose. They may know their purpose, but does that purpose
motivate them to write? The writer must also know exactly what their
stance is and how to describe it clearly to where the reader will
understand. Having a clearly described stance helps the reader
determine the purpose of the paper, sometimes without the writer out
right stating it. The context of the paper and the medium of where it is
writer or posted matters also in that it will help your audience
understand more and also access it more easily.
