The student will recall basic addition facts with sums to 18 or less and the
corresponding subtraction facts.
The student will use problem solving, mathematical
communication, mathematical reasoning, connections,
and representations to
Identify + as a symbol for addition, as a symbol
for subtraction, and = as a symbol for equality.
Recall and state orally the basic addition facts for
sums with two addends to 18 or less and the
corresponding subtraction facts.
Recall and write the basic addition facts for sums

Brain Pop Jr video on subtraction

Explain to class that today we will be learning about subtraction.
Explain the terms subtraction, subtracting, minus and difference all refer
to the same concept. Explain that subtraction is the process of taking
away or separating. Removing a set of objects from the given set of
objects, finding the difference between two numbers. Take one number
away from another. Explain that when we take away the number gets
smaller. The highest number must come first.
Create an anchor chart for ways to solve subtraction problems. (draw
pictures, use counters, write a number sentence (horizontal and
vertical), count back to subtract using a number line (start with bigger
number and subtract smaller number), use fact families (set of facts that
uses the same numbers. You can subtract the same numbers in
different ways), and count up on a number line.
Explain to class that today will be practicing subtraction by using a
number line. Model for class how to complete the math page.
Students will complete a math page solving subtraction problems using
a number line to count back.
Review with class the strategies in which we can use to solve
subtraction problems.
Students will be assessed on completion/accuracy of the number line
math sheet.

Subtraction Race Math Sheet

Cards with subtraction problems printed on them

Review ways from yesterday that we discussed ways to solve

subtraction problems.
Explain to class that they will be practicing their subtraction skills today
by working in groups. Model for class how to complete the activity by
drawing a card from the pile and solving the math subtraction problem.
Teacher should use the document camera to show students on the
smart board how to write the answer in the black spot on the math
sheet. Explain to class that they should take turns and the first one to
the finish line is the winner.
Split class up into groups of 4 and one group of 3 and spread them
throughout the class to work together. Student will take turns picking a
card with a subtraction fact on it. The student will solve the problem by
finding the difference. If they are correct they will move one space
ahead. If they are incorrect their turn will be over. The first one to the
finish line is the winner.
Review with students the days activity.
Students will be assessed on ability to accurately solve the subtraction
problems. Teacher will rotate stations and take anecdotal notes about
student ability.
Remediation group will receive math subtraction cards as well as snap
cubes to help them solve the problem
On level group will receive math subtraction cards that include math
problems with on grade level Ex- 10-3
Extension group will receive math subtraction cards that include higher
level math problems. Ex- 23-11
Students should be reminded that they are to take turns and have
proper classroom behavior while completing the activity.
Subtraction Bingo Cards
Subtraction Bingo subtraction cards
Subtraction Bingo Yellow Squares

Review ways in which we have practiced subtraction this week.

Model for students how to play Subtraction Bingo. Teacher should place
bingo card under the document camera for class to see. Pull a
subtraction problem from the container and solve it. If the answer is a
red 4 then look on the bingo card and cover the spot that has a 4 in the
red column. Explain to class that this process will continue until
someone has covered five spots in a row either straight, diagonally or
up and down.
Students will be grouped into groups of 5 and 6 and spread throughout

the classroom. Each student will receive a different color bingo card in
each group as well as yellow squares to cover up spots. Each group will
have a container full of slips of paper with math subtraction problems on
them. As each player takes a turn pulling a problem from the container
the students will solve the problems and cover the spot on their bingo
card that has that number and same color on it. For example, if the slip
of paper is written in yellow and asks 7-2 the correct answer would be a
yellow 5. The student should cover the 5 in the yellow column. One
student should be the groups recording ensuring that they write down
the correct answers on a sheet of paper to ensure that when someone
calls bingo they have the correct answers.
Review todays activity with class.
Students will be assessed by ability to accuracy complete the bingo
game.

Ensure that students know that they are to take turns as well as know
the proper procedure to play the bingo game. Remind students that
they can handle this activity and they should show you that they can
indeed handle it. Teacher will monitor student behavior and on task
behavior by circulating the classroom during activity.

Addition and Subtraction Math Sheet

Snap Cubes

Explain to class that today we will be working on both addition and

subtraction.
Model for class the difference in a minus sign and an addition sign.
Explain that it is very important to pay close attention to the sign in a
math problem so that you will know what operation to preform.
Students will complete mixed addition and subtraction math sheet.
On level group will have the option to use snap cubes.
Extension group will complete sheet without the use of snap cubes.
Review todays activity with class.
Students will be assessed on completion/accuracy of math sheet.
On level group will have the option to use snap cubes.
Extension group will complete sheet without the use of snap cubes.
Students will be reminded to try their best and to work by themselves.

Popsicle sticks with numbers 0-10 written on them

Popsicle sticks with and addition sign, subtraction sign and equals sign

Explain to the class that today we will be playing addition and

subtraction popsicle math. Model for class how to play. Pick a number
popsicle stick and add either an addition or subtraction popsicle stick to
build a math equation with another number popsicle stick. The equation
should also include an equal size. Next find the correct numbered
popsicle stick to answer the problem. Write the equation on the

recording sheet.
Students will work at their desks and each table grouping will share a
bucket with popsicle sticks. The students should work on building both
addition and subtraction math equations with popsicle sticks and then
recording the equation on the math recording sheet. Students should
build a variety of equations.
Review todays activities.
Students will be assessed on completion/accuracy of popsicle math
recording sheet.
On level group should work on building equations with only single digit
numbers.
Extension group should work on building equations with both single and
double digit numbers.
Remind students to take turns sharing the popsicle sticks. Teacher will
circulate the classroom monitoring student progress.
