TECHNOLOGY ADDICTION OR SIMPLY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ACCESSIBLE

RESOURCES
America has evolved tremendously, with technology and cell phones being the main
component of change. The present generation is the most technological and the technology will
continue to prosper whether, by opinion, good or bad. Communication is one of the main
interactions individuals must do to function throughout the day. The main way to contact others
in todays society is through technology, such as a cell phones or the internet. In the past, the
only way information could be passed was by landline phone or a letter sent in the mail. Both
methods were somewhat effective. However, the amount of time it took for news to spread was
extremely too long. In few areas, pay phones were available. Unfortunately, money would be
needed to operate these phones, and there would be a time limit before money had to be
reinserted to use the phone. Timing and efficiency problems were exactly what personal
technology fixed when it was introduced. Fortunately, cell phones and other internet accessible
devices were invented, making the ability to communicate and receive information much easier.
Some argue the fact that this type of contact lacks a face-to-face aspect and creates social
disconnection (Borreli 2013). The internet and cell phones are now a distraction in the class
room and are distracting us from the norm of our everyday lives. However, technology has only
connected the world better than before. Along with communication purposes, technology has
greater benefits. Benefits that include browsing the internet for either recreational
purposes, educational purposes, and business networking. Technology can only be harmful
if one allows it to be.
To begin with, students at universities and high schools that allow electronics in the
classroom often use laptops, computers and cell phones to complete assignments and
communicate with teachers outside of the classroom. Homework or general class info is only
accessible online in many college courses; students are encouraged to use laptops, computers, or

anything web accessible, to complete the course to the fullest potential. This also has a positive
geological aspect on the environment, eliminating a need for paper to be printed. In addition,
students are given a school based email to keep in contact with their teachers and professors out
of class. Education can become more efficient when students can work in a comfortable
environment, communicating with professors outside of a class setting with issues regarding any
form of class work. Students can also keep in contact with professors if unable meet in person.
The internet is a great way in promoting good educational standing by having help at a students
fingertips at any time.
Secondly, Americans have businesses which require networking. What better way to
promote yourself than with the use of any form of technology? Technology becomes an outlet to
showcase work being done and progress made by small and large businesses. There are several
businesses that advertise via social media, which is a highly efficient way of advertisement. Not
to mention the fact that most establishments rely on technology to organize their data collected as
far as inventory. Technology should not be considered as a negative aspect in the lives of human
beings.
Surprisingly, some would argue the fact that cell phones, laptops, or anything technology
related, is a distraction from the outside world (Borreli 2013). That technology acts as a gateway
to another setting when disinterested. Also, because some individuals abuse the use of
technology, researches focus on the negative aspects more than the positive. Things as drastic as
a car accident, to a teenager not being interested in any traditional family activity. In addition,
Nicholas Carr explains, When were constantly distracted and interrupted, as we tend to be
when looking at the screens of our computers and mobile phones, our brains cant to forge the
strong and expansive neural connections that give distinctiveness and depth to our thinking

(2010). As human beings, we are only distracted when we let ourselves become distracted.
Cellular devices and the internet should not be the only blame to being easily distracted. Just as
an alcoholic beverage can be an individuals distraction, we all have a way of stimulating our
minds. Also, technology should not be a reason behind an individual skimming or getting the
surface of any particular kind of information (Carr 2013). Before technology became one of the
main sources of information there were people only getting the surface of information when the
only available source was a text book. Again, technology can only be negative if it is allowed.
Although the world wide web has been around for just 20 years, it is hard to imagine life
without it (Carr 2013). This statement by Nicholas Carr is very true. On the optimistic
standpoint, the world is slowly but surely adapting to the excessive use of technology. It may
seem as a problem, however, it creates so very many opportunities for positive situations and
outcomes. If more attention was kept on the task at hand technology could be implemented into
the world, the ability to complete two task well is required to enjoy the widespread use of
technology.
Technology is evolving very rapidly. It is used for communication purposes, educational
purposes, recreational purposes, and business networking purposes. Therefore, people are not so
much as addicted to technology, but they are taking advantage of this advanced resource to have
a more prosperous life.
