Wind
Wind is created when air is heated to different
temperatures, and the warm air rises while the
cool air sinks.
The air trading places is what you feel when the
wind blows.

Evaporation
The suns energy can cause water molecules to
heat-up, become less dense, and rise into the air.

Condensation
When evaporated water molecules cool in the
upper troposphere, they collect together as
condensation.

Precipitation
When water molecules evaporate, the condense
together to form clouds.
When the water molecules in the clouds gather
together and become more dense, they fall as
precipitation.

Air Masses
An Air Mass is a large
collection of air with
the same
temperature and
humidity.
As Air Masses move
and collide they
create different kinds
of weather.

The Jet Stream

The Jet Stream travels from Northwest to
Southeast across North America.
Air Streams like the Jet Stream are responsible for
a large amount of Air Mass Movement.

The Jet Stream

As the Jet Stream pushes air masses into one
another, weather is created.

Air Masses
Warm Front
Warm Air Mass Cool Air Mass

What kind of weather could be expected to form here?

Air Masses
Warm Front
Warm Air Mass Cool Air Mass

The moisture in the warm air will cool , condense, and fall: creating some rain.
As the warm air rises, the cool air will take its place below, creating wind.

Air Masses
Cold front
Cool Air Mass Warm Air Mass

What kind of weather could be expected to form here?

Air Masses
Cold front
Cool Air Mass Warm Air Mass

It will become colder (temperatures will decrease) and wind may form as
the cooler air moves-in to take the place of the warm air.

Air Masses
Cold front
Cool Air Mass Hot/Humid Air Mass

The moisture in the humid air will condense as

it meets the cool air, and create clouds/rain.
More humidity = more condensation and rain.

Ocean Currents
Ocean currents are the movement of warm and
cool water as it is heated-up at the equator and
cools-down at the poles.

Thermal Energy Transfer

The Sun transfers
thermal energy (heat)
to the Earth through
radiation.
Heat is radiated across
the earth, and
reflected back into
the air- creating warm
air masses.

Thermal Energy Transfer

LAND
Heats more quickly
and to higher
temperatures.
Reflects more heat
immediately back into
the atmosphere.

WATER
Heats more slowly.
Stores thermal energy
and carries it to new
locations.

Thermal Energy Transfer

Extreme weather changes are less likely to
happen near large bodies of water, because the
water heats and cools more slowly than land,
keeping the environment more stable.

Ocean Currents
The Gulf Stream is a warm ocean current off
the East Coast of the United States. How
does it effect the weather of the East Coast?

Because the ocean stores more thermal

energy than the land, it will heat the air
above the water and make air
temperatures warmer nearby.

Air Pressure
Air pressure can be affected by
temperature and altitude.
Warm air rises = LOW pressure
Cool air sinks = HIGH pressure
Higher Altitude = LOWer pressure

Air Pressure
When a HIGH pressure system and a LOW
pressure system meet, what kind of
weather might be created?

As the air pressures collide, the low pressure rises and high
pressure falls, creating strong winds. Moisture is carried
upwards, cooled, and falls as rain.

Climate

The climate of an area is the average

weather in an area over a 30-year time
period.
