Introduction
This competency of Student Centered Learning includes a homework assignment
worksheet that I created for my students to complete at home to determine whether the numbers
in the number box are odd or even and whether they are also prime or composite. This
homework assignment is very important to be centered on students learning the content for the
SOLs so they can understand the difference between even and odd numbers and prime and
composite numbers. The PowerPoint presentation is also very important to be centered on
student learning because it is all based off of things they are familiar with and that can be applied
to science.
Rationale for Selection of Artifacts
The math homework worksheet was selected because it gives students a deeper
understanding that not all odd numbers are prime and that there also are not any even numbers
that are prime. Some students do not understand this concept yet, but this homework assignment
will help me to know who understands it and who does not fully understand yet. I wrote the chart
down using a dry-erase marker on one of the back tables during math center time and some of
the students seemed to have a really good grasp on the chart, but some did seem to have troubles
figuring out which numbers go where because they are slower on their math facts. Since the SOL
standards place an emphasis on students knowing whether a number is even or odd and prime or
composite, it is important for these students to be competent in sorting these numbers on a chart
like the one I will give them. It is also important for students to get into the habit of doing
homework and turning in order to practice math problems at home. This is an example of
student-centered learning because it is centered around the various ways students learn the
difference between even and odd numbers, as well as prime and composite numbers.
The PowerPoint presentation about mixtures and solutions was to segway from learning
about solids, liquids, and gases to learning about what it would be like to combine two

substances. This short presentation was to introduce the students to mixtures and solutions before
going into the Mixtures and Solutions lab. It was student centered learning because it was all
based off of things that students see often and used that prior knowledge to help them make
connections to what mixtures and solutions are. The students seemed to really have a better grasp
as to what the differences are between mixtures and solutions, except they kept thinking that a
solid mixed with another liquid would always make a mixture so I had to clear that up for them.
Reflection on Theory and Practice
My classes at Regent University have helped me to create an assignment that will
effectively be centered on the students practicing their math facts and to know the differences
between even and odd numbers and prime and composite numbers. Student centered learning is
really what Regent has taught me throughout every class. I have had assignments before where I
had to make a worksheet based on how the students learn and it has helped me to practice and
perfect different strategies for reviewing content to the students. I do realize that I have a hard
time executing my plans, I know that it will come easier with practice and that I have a good start
by making worksheets and plans that will help students to have a certain set of skills to practice
their math factorization.
The PowerPoint presentation was an idea that came to me because of my Integrated
Science class that taught me how to use different resources, like a simple PowerPoint
presentation to introduce students to a unit topic. It doesnt have to be anything lengthy or fancy.
The class taught me that simplicity is sometimes better, especially when introducing a topic in
science.
