Human Resources - School District 41 (Burnaby)
5325 Kincaid St., Burnaby, B.C V5G 1W2

Dear Human Resources Team,

I have recently completed the Professional Development program at SFU and I am keenly applying for
a teaching position with School District #41. Having gone through the Burnaby school system as a student
myself and been part of the community from a young age, I would be honoured to now have the opportunity
to become a part of the professional team in the Burnaby School District. Along with its myriad of possibilities
for growth, I value Burnabys mission to provide a supportive, inclusive and caring community for all students
to develop their individual potential, preparing them to be successful as life-long learners.

Importantly, following a remarkable experience during my practicum at Edmonds Community School,
I have had the opportunity to explore and develop my own teaching practice. Additionally, having been a part
of SFUs Sustainability Education in Environments of Diversity (SEED) module and receiving a minor in
Environmental Education, I understand the importance of recognizing that student learning also occurs
beyond pen and paper through hands on and experiential education. For example, I created a mock election
for my Canadian government unit to enhance student understanding of the electoral and voting process. As
well, I used kinesthetic activities in Science to simulate the molecular make up of matter and physically active
games in the math classroom. Furthermore, having had a large focus on Aboriginal perspectives and having
been introduced to the First Peoples Principles of Learning, I have worked to implement these holistic ideas
into my planning and will continue to do so moving forward.

I whole-heartedly embrace the need for incorporating various outlooks along with collaborative and
cross-curricular learning opportunities. Moreover, I believe it is beneficial to take a student-centered
approach to learning, to value and to celebrate the diverse learners in the classroom. It is with this all
encompassing approach that I plan to continue to build strong student-teacher relationships, create a safe
learning environment for my students and effectively manage the classroom. If given the opportunity to join
this district, I would strive to incorporate all of this knowledge into my practice.

It is truly my aspiration to join the Burnaby School District and bring an open-mind, positive attitude
and a kindhearted demeanor as both a teacher and colleague. I am confident that I would be a valuable asset
to your school district and the educational community. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to
further discuss my qualifications and interest with you in person.

Thank you for your consideration and taking the time to review my resume.

Sincerely,

Hayley Van Poele
