LSW: Bridge to Terebithia
Discussion Questions and Explanation of Importance
1. Why is it so important that Leslie and Jess come to understand the
reason behind Janices bullying habits?
-Throughout the book, Jess, Leslie, and many other characters deal with
the bullying from Janice Avery. She is depicted as a giant who
threatened peace in Jess and Leslies everyday life and in their life in
Terebithia. However, later on in the book it is revealed that she is
severely beaten by her father. Even worse, one of Janices friends
starts a rumor about it to the whole school. Janice is embarrassed and
hurt that her so-called friend would do such a thing. This revelation of
the two main characters is very crucial. First it shows that all people,
despite their outward flaws, are really just human deep down. Janice
was dealing with a major issue in her life, and this is very relatable to a
lot of children. Second, it teaches the children that they can overcome
their challenges, or giants in life with care and compassion. Not
everything needs to be overcome in a violent way. This is revealing one
of the greatest parts of the books theme, and that is humanity.
Furthermore, it helps us to understand all of the characters a little

better, and creates connections with a vast amount of readers. I truly

believe that asking this question is important to the novel. Janice,
although seemingly a minor character, actually shows a lot of children
a deep theme that is great to address.
2. Why do you think Jess chose to bring his sister to Terebithia after the
death of Leslie?
-This is another question that is crucial to our understanding of the
book. Jess starts out as a character with very few friends, if any at all.
Leslie is not only a true friend, but also shows Jess a whole new world.
She is adventurous, caring, and doesnt conform to the norms of their
society. They have a fantastic friendship of adventures and fun. They
fight their giants and create an amazing bond. Leslie really begins to
shed her light on Jess as their friendship grows. When things seem to
have lost all hope at the death of Leslie, it actually brings around a
surprisingly wonderful ending. Jess at the end of the book is able to
carry on his life, despite not having Leslie by his side. His act of
bringing May Belle with him to Terebithia shows that Leslie had a
profound impact on his life. He has discovered himself and can now
begin to share this life of goodness with others.
