Abstract
The main objective of this assignment was to make norms and
rules for our team (Elite team) to have a unique, cooperative and
successful group. We used three important and essential steps in this
assignment. Firstly, we used brainstorming technique individually, to
generate 10 promoters that will help in the success of our team, as
well as 10 barriers to avoid ourselves from them for having a
productive and prosperous team. In this step we gathered 60
promoters and 60 barriers. Next, we used Boggle Method; through this
method we removed duplicated promoters and barriers of each
individual. For removing duplicates we set up a meeting on 27 th
October in IE201 building. After evaluating we removed 17 duplicated
promoters and 23 duplicated barriers. In final step we used Modified
Multi-Voting step. In this step our leader chose a special symbol for
each individual to vote for a valorous and reasonable promoter or
barrier. After this technique we collected 10 promoters and barriers
with high votes. After all these, we give equal work for each individual
to finish this assignment by deadline. This assignment considered very
effective and useful for a team, because through this assignment every
team can make creative and productive norms that will help them in
their success.

Work
To begin with, we started with individual brainstorming where
each member generated 10 promoters and 10 barriers. After that, we
met in order to discuss our ideas and remove the duplicated points by
using Boggle's Method. Then, we started the Multi-Voting Method
where each member chose a special symbol to be used in voting. After
1 | Page

we finished these three steps, we distributed the work among the

members and assigned a deadline to collect the tasks. The last step
was sitting together to analyze and discuss the team norms we came
up with the final 20 team norms which we are going to apply in order
to help us to maintain our team perfectly to become a productive,
cooperative and professional team.

Step 1: Individual Brainstorming

Brainstorming is one of the oldest techniques which stimulate
creativity. It is a familiar and effective technique for generating
solutions"[1]. In this step, we used brainstorming technique to find a
number of promoters that will help the team to work with best possible
way as well as to find a number of barriers that may make problems in
our team. Every member in this step wrote ten promoters and ten
barriers which that he thought it would help the team. Each of the
following tables shows the promoters and barriers of each member.
The result of brainstorming is shown in Tables 1 and 2 in the next two
pages.

Discussion of Brainstorming
5 | Page

Brainstorming is useful technique to generate solution. It helps

us to generate many of promoters and barriers. As the result of this
step, we had 60 promoters and 60 barriers from all the team members.
After that we moved to the next step which is Boggles method.

Step 2: Boggles Method

Boggles method is used to remove duplicate ideas in a team
which are a result of individual brainstorming. Some of these
promoters or barriers have the same meaning but they have different
formulation. So, we removed those promoters or barriers whose have
the same meaning. The result of boggles method is shown on tables 3
and 4 in the next two pages. After the boggles method we put the final
results on one table (see table 5).

Discussion of Boggle's Method

Boggle's method has helped us to get unique list of promoters
and barriers. When we have applied boggle's method, we started from
member one. He read his promoters and barriers loudly and if any
member has the same idea on either promoters or barriers make mark
on it. As well as, we did the same things with each member until we
reached to member six. Then, we selected promoters and barriers
which has the best formulation. After that we moved to Step 3 which is
called Modified Multi voting.

11 | P a g e

Step 3: Modified Multi Voting

Modified multi-voting" is a technique to help a team or group
quickly reduce a large list of items to a smaller number of high priority
items". The process often results in a high degree of team agreement
and it promotes team ownership. There are things to be working at in
this step, which are count the number of items on the list and divide it
by three (this is the number of votes each person has). Each person
should use their votes (or symbol) to select the items they want to
keep. Each person can vote for any items. However, it is a good
practice to limit the number of votes that any person can assign to one
item to two, the team can decide if they want to increase or decrease
this limit. Finally, List the alternatives in the new prioritized order, and
critically discuss the top alternatives in order to reach consensus [2].
For this information, we count the number of promoters and
barriers and we found that we have 43 promoters and 33 barriers. After
that, we divided the numbers of promoters and barriers by 3, that gave
us a number of votes for promoters and barriers. For every member we
have 14 votes for promoters and 11 votes for barriers. Before we start
making votes, each member selected special sign for his votes.
Member one selected (@), member two selected (#), member three
selected ($) and member four selected (*), member five selected (%)
and number six selected (&). Also, we limited the number of votes that
any person can assign, two votes maximum for each item. After that
we started the process of making the votes. Each member make his
votes on the paper that contain the promotes and barriers. The result
of modified multi voting for promoters and barriers are shown on tables
6 and 7 in the next two pages.

Discussion of Multi-Voting
After we completed this step, we extracted with the most voted 10
promoters and 10 barriers of the team. We finished this step by conducting
a meeting in building 534 in KAU where we took about 30 minutes to vote
on and extract the top promoters and barriers. This step helped us to
continue to the next steps which are; putting functional statements for each
promoter, putting a number of preventive and contingency rules for each
barrier.

Promoters
After finishing the first three steps, Brainstorming, Boggles
Method and Modified Multi-Voting, we got 10 promoters and 10 barriers
in a table. We will continue with the team norms by writing functional
statements for the promoters. We will write the functional statements
for each promoter in a separated table to explain the meaning of it and
the way that we have to apply it.

Discussion of Promoters
In the previous table we showed the meaning of the final ten
promoters. Every promoter has a meaning that makes it easier to apply
in the team. We got out with these meanings; it will help us to improve
our team in a positive way.

Barriers
Barriers are the things that might have negative impacts on the
team by reducing the team productivity and creativity. After doing all
the steps above, we approached to a list of barriers that might be
facing us during the team meetings and activities. In table 10, we will
show a list of our top ten barriers with a list of preventive procedures
and another one for contingencies ones for each one of the top ten
barriers. The preventive procedures are followed to avoid the barriers
from occurring and the contingencies ones are used for dealing with
barriers if they occur and treating them.

Discussion of Barriers
At this stage, we needed to provide some ideas to prevent our
barriers from occurring as well as some procedures how we can apply
those preventives throughout our course duration. In the table above,
we have stated some preventives and contingencies in an organized
way to achieve our aim from doing this task easily and smoothly. We
19 | P a g e

first constructed a table with our final 10 barriers. Then, we divided it

into three parts; the long row which has the name and number of the
barrier, two columns: one for preventive and another one for
contingency. After that, we started generating as many preventives
and contingencies as we could possibly do. At the end, we will try to
avoid our barriers by implementation that we have written in
contingency and preventive such as choosing an appropriate date for
the meeting.

Conclusion
Success of every individual, organization and group depend on
the norms and rules that they follow on their daily tasks. Good rules
can lead them to successes and achievements while, ineffective rules
will lead them to failures. According to this, we considered this
assignment very effective for the whole groups and classes in IE201.
Through this assignment they can make a productive and success
team, which will help them in their future assignments to perform
easily and confidently. For doing this assignment we did some
meetings and use some important steps. In the beginning through
brainstorming each individual of group generated 10 promoters and
barriers. After that we used Boggle Method to remove duplicated
promoters and barriers. In the third step, we used Modified Multi-Voting
technique to get 10 most reasonable and valuable promoters and
barriers. We recommend all the students to make creative and
productive norms to carry them to a high mountain of successes and
achievements.
