Dear Dr. Bruce,
The purpose of this cover letter is to demonstrate how I have successfully
executed the student learning outcomes (SLOs) by providing exceptional documents that
are contained in the portfolio. These documents include: an original copy of the iFixit
resume with your comments, peer review of original copy, a revised iFixit resume, two ewaste presentation power point slides, one writers notebook entry, and this cover letter.
Each of these documents has demonstrated my growth and understanding of the SLOs,
which will be explained in this letter.
The first document presented in the portfolio is an original copy of the iFixit
resume. For this task I was assigned to apply for one of the four positions associated with
the iFixit project: Project Leader, Editing Coordinator, Research Manager, and
Photography Manager. The purpose of this assignment was to persuade you, Dr. Bruce,
why I should obtain the position as a Research Manager. In order to persuade you, I
provided a list of skills and experiences that contributed to the tasks as a Research
Manager. Since this was an in class formal assignment, I satisfied a small portion of the
Rhetorical Focus, which was SLO number one.
After receiving feedback from my peers about my resume, I realized that it was
not written as well as I previously thought. Based on the feedback, my document lacked
persuasion by not providing enough content for the position I was trying to obtain. I
found it difficult trying to improve my document because I thought my work experience
was enough to persuade my audience. In addition, I provided a list of skills demonstrating
that I am proficient as an iFixit Researcher. By expanding my content and taking the
feedback into consideration, this demonstrates the satisfactory of Collaboration.
Once I made the necessary revisions, I then submitted the document for grading. I
was surprised with the score that I received because I felt that I had fulfilled the criteria.
Once I read your feedback, I understood what changes needed to be made. Even though I
provided an advance form of Organization, I still needed to adjust SLO numbers three
and five: persuasion, language & design. In order to satisfy these two SLOs, I revised the
entire document by reconstructing the entire template, which presented a professional
appearance; provided adequate skills pertaining to being a researcher: computer literacy,
research analytics, and statistical practice for the social science (SPSS); and structured
the bullet points more effectively. I believe with these efficient changes made, this
document executes Persuasion, Organization, Language & Design, and Collaboration.
The following documents that I have provided in the portfolio are two power
point slides from the e-waste presentation. One slide holds research information and an in

text citation based on my topic, Sexual Violence & Electronics Manufacturing, and a
slide containing the bibliography. The purpose of this assignment was to educate the
class, the audience, on the crisis happening in Congo due to increase demands of major
minerals that produce electronic devices. Since I had to relate this topic to a variety of
audiences, such as you and the students, by explaining how purchasing new devices each
year is causing conflict in the Congo area. By doing so, I have fulfilled a portion of the
Rhetorical Focus. One SLO that I did satisfy was Ethical Citation. The slide that I
provided in the portfolio demonstrates how I can pull information from different
resources and properly cite them. To prove that I have mastered Ethical Citation, I
provided a bibliography slide for you to view the material that I have analyzed.
The final document thats included in my portfolio is a writers notebook from
September 17th. This document displays informal writing such as simple, short sentences
with abbreviations. It achieved the informal portion of the Rhetorical Focus, so by
providing these documents I have acquired complete knowledge of this SLO.
I hope by reading this letter, youve seen the vast improvements I made through
the whole semester by providing these necessary documents. I have learned that there is
always room for improvement and that I should not be close minded about my peers
opinions. I hope this portfolio can reflect my hard work and growth as a writer.
Sincerely,
Monica Oropeza
