Myparents,nottrustingtheviolentworldofthelate
1960s,builtawallbetweenmeandthecrudestelementsof
Americanpopculture,(Para.1).InGerardJonesarticle,
ViolentMediaisGoodforKids,Joneshasthestandpointthat
violenceindifferentmediasaregoodforyoungpeople.The
articlemostlytalksfromapersonal(pathos)standpointonhow
violenceinmediahasallowedhimtobecomeabetteradult,also
usingdifferentpeopleinhislifeasreferencesaswell.Since
thisarticlemostlyusesPathos,itcomesfromamuchmore
personalnotethanalogicalone.ItcanbeseenasEthosaswell
becauseinparagraph5,itgoesofftosaythatJoneswas
inspiredtowritemoviesandcomicslaterinhislife.This
approachisnttheworsewaytotalkaboutthistopic,butit
certainlyisntthebest.Thisisbecauseitgiveswaytoolittle
credibilityandjusthavingtotakethewordoftheauthors
experiences.

TheevidencethatJonesgivesisacceptable,butdoesraise
somequestions.Thesequestionsmostlyderivefromthe
credibilityofhisobservationsandhisresearch.Hecitesa
psychologistandclaimsthattheyhaveworkedtogether(Para.
10).Butduringthattimeofresearchingthecorrelationbetween
violenceandchildren,hedoesnotciteanyothersources.Also,
hespeaksaboutknowingpeoplethathaveexperiencedbeing
neglectedfromviolence,butthereadersarentabletogivetoo
muchvaluetothesepeople.Sincetheyarepersonalacquaintances
ofJones,weareunabletovalidatetheircredibilityasasource
and,alongwithJonesbackstory,willjusthavetotakehisword
forit.
TheproblemsthatJonesaddressesareonesthatweremore
rootedtowardshissurroundings.Jonesspeaksabouthowviolence
inmediaallowsyoungadultstogrowup,controltheirangerand
violentintent,andthedifferentcharacteristicsthatcomewith
agingandthecharactersthatyoungpeoplelookupto.Sincemany
oftheseexamplesareexperiencedfirsthand,manyofitseems
verysituational.Jonesspeaksabouthowhisparentswerevery
protectiveofhimasachild,notallowinghimtobeoutgoingand
understandhisfeelings(para.15).Jonesthenproceedstotalk
aboutotherpeoplesexperiencesthroughparagraphs6,1315.

Thisalsoseemssituationalbecausethereisonlysomuchthat
Jonesseesandwhathisobservationsindicate.
Itisntuntilparagraphs912whereJonesstartstogain
credibility.Jonesstatesthatatthispointinhislife,he
beginstoresearchaboutviolenceonyoungpeopleduetoschool
shootingsinAmerica(Para.78).HequotesMelanieMoore,a
psychologistwithaPh.D.,whohasstudiedurbanteensand
consultspublicschoolsandlocalgovernments(Para912).Itis
apparentthatDr.Mooreknowswhatshesspeakingabout.She
talksaboutthedualidentityissuesthatmanysuperheroesface
incomicsthatyoungpeoplecanrelatetoduringtheirtimeof
findingthemselvesintheworld.Shealsospeaksaboutanidea
called,creativeviolence.Creativeviolenceisallowing
childrentofeelrageinacontrolledenvironment.So,beita
playgroundinrecessorplayingvideogames,childrenareableto
expresstheirrageandcontrolitbetterwhencomingoutoftheir
funtime.
Jonesbrieflyspeaksabouttheopposingviewsofviolence
beingexposedtoyoungchildrenduringparagraph16.Theargument
thatJonespresentsisthatviolententertainmenthasinspired
realworldviolence,butonlyinthatoneline.Therestofthe
paragraphtalksabouthowitdoesmoreharmthangoodtoprevent

childrenfrombeingexposedtoviolence.ThisshowsthatJones
hasnotdonetoomuchresearchforopposingargumentsagainst
youngpeoplebeingexposedtoviolence,butmoresojust
strengtheninghisargumentsfortheexposureofviolence.This
alsoshowshisacknowledgmenttotheopposingside,buthedoes
notrefuteittoowell.ThisisonlybecauseJonesbringsuponly
thatoneline,notdismissingoracknowledginganyothercases
againsthisargument.
Overall,Iwasnttooimpressedwiththearticle.Itbrought
upsomegoodpoints,butmostofitwerentbackedbymuchother
thanJonespersonalexperiences.Thiswasagoodblendoflogic
andemotion,buteventhelogicsegmentswasntbackedtoomuch
byanysources.Thefirstcoupleofparagraphswerestrong,butI
feltthatmorecrediblesources(possiblyfromhistime
researching)wouldvemadethisargumentstrong.Itwasalsothe
lackofacknowledgmenttowardsanyopposingviewsthatreally
showedwhereJonesfocusedhisresearch.Thiswouldbeagreat
readtowardsafriendlyaudience,butIdontbelieveJones
wouldbeabletobudgeahostileenvironmentwiththelackof
knowledgetowardsanyopposingviews.
