Genre Analysis
All psychology experiments have the same basis. They have a code of
conduct, a controlled group, an experimental group, and many other factors that
take part in an experimental process. In all psychology experiments, you have a test
group that is your dependent variable, and one that is your independent variable or
the experimental group. To do experiments on people, you usually have to get a
signature and usually you must stick to, but sometimes the experiments stray from
that. The experiment I chose to show how this can happen, is The Stanford Prison
Experiment. The Stanford Prison Experiment was by Dr. Phil Zimbardo that took
place on August 1420, 1971 in a prison-like environment in the basement of the
Psychology Department at Stanford University. The purpose of this experiment was
to find out how having power influences ones behavior, and how people assume
the roles of their positions.
The Stanford Prison Experiment is a normal experiment in one way and very
different in another. This experiment has a dependent variable, an independent
variable and a code of conduct, like all experiments. This experiment started off just
like a normal experiment, following the normal guidelines. The difference is, when
the experiment started to break ethically codes, the experiment was not concluded.
The Stanford experiment works with most conventions, because it has the materials
needed that all psychology experiments need also started off like any normal
experiment. It stretches the conventions, because most experiments stick strictly to
the moral and ethical standards; whereas, Stanfords experiment strays from that.
The Stanford Prison Experiment is an experiment that defies the norms and
the rules and ethical outlook on psychology experimentation. This experiment
started off like all of the normal experiments and took place in the basement of a
building at Stanford. In this experiment, there were the prisoners, and the guards.
The guards were not allowed to touch the prisoners, but then they started to
assume the role of their position. The experiment took a turn for the worst and it
started to become a real prison. The guards were pushing around the prisoners and
forcing them to do physical activities, and psychically assault the prisoners, starting
to break the rules for the experiment. When the scientists over-looking this
experiment did not stop it when they were breaking the rules, although said
beforehand that they would, they start to break moral and ethically codes.
The genre changes in many ways through this text. As the experiment went
on, peoples views on the experiment changed completely, because it started
becoming unethical. The genre changes as this experiment goes through the
change, from a normal experiment, to one that is like a prison and goes beyond the
acceptable fields of research.
